Es asintomática hasta en 56% de los casos, siendo el tratamiento de elección la cirugía laparoscópica. Mujer de 33 años con antecedente de colocación de DIU liberador de levonorgestrel, cuatro años previos presentó síntomas inespecíficos pélvicos con mejoría parcial tras tratamiento. Se realizó rastreo de DIU por ultrasonido sin hallarlo en útero, por lo que se solicitó radiografía de abdomen evidenciando su localización extrauterina. Se realizó laparoscopia para extracción de DIU adherido a omento, sin complicaciones. El mecanismo de perforación uterina más común se produce durante la inserción del DIU; sin embargo, una perforación uterina parcial puede predisponer a la perforación completa por contracciones uterinas. Se reitera la importancia de realizar revisiones radiográficas periódicas tras la colocación de un dispositivo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Uterine perforation by intrauterine device (IUD) insertion is a rare and potentially severe complication. It is asymptomatic in up to 56% of cases, being laparoscopic surgery the treatment of choice. A 33-year-old woman with a history of levonorgestrel-releasing IUD placement four years earlier, presented nonspecific pelvic symptoms with partial improvement after medical treatment. Ultrasonography for IUD tracking was performed without success; abdomen radiography was requested showing its extrauterine location. Laparoscopy was performed for extraction, founding IUD attached to the omentum, without complications. The most common uterine perforation mechanism occurs during IUD insertion, however, partial perforation could predispose total perforation by uterine contractions. The importance of regular radiographic follow-up after the placement of an IUD is highlighted in this case report.]]></p></abstract>
