En México se ha visto que los hombres tienen mayor incidencia a hendiduras de labios aisladas, así como de labio y paladar, mientras que las mujeres tienen mayor incidencia a hendiduras de paladar aisladas.  Objetivos:  Describir la etiología de esta malformación, así como presentar la epidemiología, cuadro clínico, clasificación, diagnóstico y tratamiento multidisciplinario actualizado.  Métodos:  Estudio observacional descriptivo realizado mediante la búsqueda sistemática de PubMed y EBSCO, se utilizaron los términos de búsqueda: Cleft lip, Cleft lip and palate, Cleft palate, Congenital anomalies. Se seleccionaron los artículos que tuvieran un aporte relevante a esta investigación. Se obtuvieron 29 artículos como muestra final.  Resultados:  En México, la incidencia varía entre 1/2,000 y 1/5,000 nacimientos por año. Puede presentarse de manera aislada, combinada, unilateral o bilateral y es causada por factores genéticos y ambientales. El diagnóstico se da mediante una ecografía en tercera dimensión, analizando las estructuras anatómicas faciales. El tratamiento es multidisciplinario, dirigido principalmente por el área de cirugía reconstructiva.  Conclusiones:  Es importante para la madre y el médico llevar de forma adecuada el control prenatal, para prevenir cualquier condición que determine la morbilidad materna y perinatal.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The cleft lip-palate is the most common congenital malformation. In Mexico, male patients have been seen. While female women have a higher incidence on the isolated palate.  Objectives: To describe the etiology of this malformation, as well as to present the epidemiology, clinical picture, classification, diagnosis and updated multidisciplinary treatment.  Methods:  A descriptive observational study was carried out through the systematic search of PubMed and EBSCO, using the search terms: Cleft lip, Cleft lip and palate, Cleft palate, Congenital anomalies. Selecting the most relevant articles that you had in a relevant investigation. 29 articles were obtained as a final sample.  Results:  In Mexico, the incidence between 1/2,000 and 1/5,000 births per year. It can be produced in an isolated, combined, unilateral or bilateral way and is caused by genetic and environmental factors. The diagnosis is given by a third-dimensional ultrasound, analyzing facial anatomical structures. The treatment is multidisciplinary, directed mainly by the area of reconstructive surgery.  Conclusions:  It is important for the mother and the doctor to carry out the appropriate prenatal control, preventing any condition that conditions the maternal and perinatal morbidity.]]></p></abstract>
