No obstante, su elevación se ha asociado con otros biomarcadores de inflamación. Se relacionan valores por arriba de 15% con incremento de la mortalidad en pacientes críticamente enfermos.  Objetivo:  Determinar la relación en nuestro medio de aumento de ADE y mortalidad de los pacientes en la Unidad de Terapia Intensiva.  Material y métodos:  Los pacientes admitidos fueron aquellos ingresados de marzo a agosto de 2018. Los datos incluidos en el análisis estadístico fueron: SOFA, SAPS 3, hemoglobina, hematocrito, leucocitos, plaquetas, ADE, creatinina, albúmina, así como datos demográficos. Los valores de laboratorios tomados como normales fueron los señalados por el laboratorio de nuestra unidad.  Resultados:  De acuerdo con la prueba estadística &#967;2, al relacionar las defunciones en la UTI con los valores de ADE, se obtuvo un p valor de 0.048, lo que demuestra relación entre dichas variables.  Conclusiones:  El aumento de ADE se asocia significativamente con una mayor tasa de mortalidad y es útil para la estratificación del riesgo en pacientes críticos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: The red cell distribution (RDW), is a measure of the heterogeneity of erythrocytes, is elevated in anemia or malnutrition states. However, its elevation has been associated with other inflammation biomarkers. Values above 15% are associated with increased mortality in critically ill patients.  Objective:  To determine the relationship in our environment of RDW increase and the mortality of patients in the Intensive Therapy Unit.  Material and methods:  Admitted patients were those admitted between march 2018 and august 2018, the data included in the statistical analysis were: SOFA, SAPS 3, hemoglobin, hematocrit, leukocytes, platelets, RDW, creatinine, albumin, as well as data demographic. The laboratory values taken as normal were those indicated by the laboratory of our unit.  Results:  According to the &#967;2 statistical test, when relating the deaths in the ITU with the RDW values, a p value of 0.048 was obtained, demonstrating the existence of a relationship between these variables.  Conclusions:  The increase in RDW is significantly associated with a higher mortality rate and is useful for risk stratification in critically ill patients.]]></p></abstract>
