Este artículo analiza el sistema simbólico que representa el bats&#8217;ik&#8217;op (término que significa "lengua verdadera" o "auténtica", utilizado para referirse a las lenguas tsotsil y tseltal) en la construcción identitaria del estudiantado tsotsil de la comunidad de Ts&#8217;omolton, ubicada en el municipio de Chalchihuitán, Chiapas. El estudio se circunscribe a una comunidad tsotsil monolingüe, en la cual dicha lengua constituye un rasgo identitario altamente valorado. El objetivo es examinar la situación lingüística de los estudiantes y comprender el sistema de representación identitaria que la lengua otorga en la vivencia de sus hablantes. Desde una perspectiva etnográfica, se busca captar el vínculo entre lengua e identidad a partir de una exploración centrada en el contexto escolar de nivel primaria. La investigación se sustenta en diversos procesos históricos y sociopolíticos que han influido en el fortalecimiento de la identidad tsotsil en Chalchihuitán. Se muestra cómo las circunstancias vividas por la población tsotsil han contribuido a mantener viva su identidad lingüística, así como los cuestionamientos en torno a la pertinencia del uso del tsotsil como lengua de instrucción escolar. Entre los hallazgos, se identifica que factores como la expulsión de hablantes del español, el aislamiento respecto a la influencia urbana y su efecto en la persistencia del uso de la lengua tsotsil dentro de la comunidad han permitido evitar la amenaza a su identidad lingüística originaria.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract. This article analyzes the symbolic system represented by bats&#8217;ik&#8217;op (a term meaning "true" or "authentic language," used to refer to the Tsotsil and Tseltal languages) in the identity construction of Tsotsil students from the community of Ts&#8217;omolton, located in the municipality of Chalchihuitán, Chiapas. The study focuses on a monolingual Tsotsil community where the language is a highly valued identity marker. The aim is to examine the students&#8217; linguistic situation and to understand the identity representation system that the language conveys in the lived experience of its speakers. From an ethnographic perspective, the study explores the link between language and identity, focusing on the context of primary education. The research is grounded in various historical and sociopolitical processes that have influenced the strengthening of Tsotsil identity in Chalchihuitán. The article shows how the experiences of the Tsotsil population have contributed to preserving their linguistic identity, and highlights debates around the appropriateness of using Tsotsil as the language of instruction in schools. Among the findings, the study identifies that factors such as the expulsion of Spanish speakers, isolation from urban influence, and the resulting persistence of Tsotsil use within the community have helped to protect their original linguistic identity from external threats.]]></p></abstract>
