The production of bolaina wood has increased, consequently the generation of wood residues has also risen. Fortunately, this waste can be used as raw material to manufacture other products. This study aims to produce test boards that can achieve at least, the minimal requirements of European and American standard for medium-density fiberboards (MDF) produced using two types of pulps, namely refiner mechanical pulp (RMP) and chemi-mechanical pulp (CMP), from bolaina wood residue obtained from a 5 to 8-year-old forest plantation and using two types of resins: urea -formaldehyde (UF) and emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI). To manufacture RMP and CMP, wood residues were pretreated through water and 5% sodium hydroxide (w/w) soaking respectively for 24 h. The fiber morphological parameters of both pulps were analyzed using the Morfi compact equipment. Additionally, woods and pulps were also chemically characterized. The solid contents of the resins were 65% for UF and 23% for EPI diluted with distilled water. Both resins were applied with a dose of 10% (w/w). Four types of MDF were prepared: RMP-UF, CMP-UF, RMP-EPI, and CMP-EPI. The results confirmed the feasibility of preparing MDF with wood residues (5% bark) of bolaina as the raw material. In terms of the contributions of resins, MDF with EPI exhibited better physical and mechanical properties than that manufactured with the UF. The pulps, RMP and CMP, had similar performance in MDF. The RMP-EPI and CMP-EPI boards exhibited the best properties.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Bolaina (Guazuma crinita Mart.) es una de las especies vegetales más utilizadas en las plantaciones forestales de Ucayali, Perú. La producción de madera de bolaina ha incrementado, consecuentemente también la generación de residuos de madera. Afortunadamente, estos residuos se pueden utilizar como materia prima para fabricar otros productos. Este estudio tiene como objetivo lograr producir tableros que cumplan, cuando menos, con los requisitos mínimos de la norma europea y americana para tableros de fibra de densidad media (MDF) producidos con dos tipos de pulpas, es decir, pulpa mecánica (RMP) y pulpa químico-mecánica (CMP), a partir de residuos de madera de bolaina obtenidos de una plantación forestal de 5 años a 8 años, y usando dos tipos de resinas: urea-formaldehído (UF) y emulsión de polímero de isocianato (EPI). Para fabricar RMP y CMP, los residuos de madera se pretrataron con agua e hidróxido de sodio a 5% de concentración (p/p), respectivamente, durante 24 h. Los parámetros morfológicos de las fibras de ambas pulpas se analizaron utilizando el equipo Morfi compact . Además, también se caracterizaron químicamente las maderas y pulpas. Los contenidos de sólidos de las resinas fueron 65% para UF y 23% para EPI diluido con agua destilada. Ambas resinas se aplicaron con una dosis de 10% (p/p). Se prepararon cuatro tipos de MDF: RMP-UF, CMP-UF, RMP-EPI y CMP-EPI. Los resultados confirmaron la viabilidad de preparar MDF con residuos de madera (5% de corteza) de bolaina como materia prima. En cuanto a la influencia de las resinas, el MDF con EPI presentó mejores propiedades físicas y mecánicas que el fabricado con el UF. Las pulpas, RMP y CMP, tuvieron un comportamiento similar en MDF. RMP-EPI y CMP-EPI exhibieron las mejores propiedades.]]></p></abstract>
