The aim of this study was to compare four bell pepper production systems using two canopy arrangements (stair-like and uniform) and two planting densities (6 and 8 plants·m-2). The cultivar 'Cannon' was used. The experimental design used was plots split into randomized blocks with four replications. The plant row arrangements were located in the large plots and the densities in the subplots. With the stepped arrangement, the yield per unit area increased with respect to the control (uniform arrangement) by obtaining a higher fruit set per plant, without decreasing its weight. Under this plant arrangement, the density increase from 6 to 8 plants·m-2 did not boost yield. The highest yield obtained was 12 kg·m-2 with 6 plants·m-2 of greenhouse area in a period of four months, from transplant to final harvest. This suggests the possibility of establishing three crop cycles per year, with an annual yield higher than those achieved by current greenhouse production systems.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Una alternativa a la producción de pimiento morrón (Capsicum annuum L.) bajo invernadero consiste en el manejo de las plantas en alta densidad de población, con despuntes por encima de la cuarta ramificación para lograr ciclos cortos y con disposición de hileras de plantas a diferentes alturas para formar un dosel en forma de escalera (dosel escaleriforme), sistema que no ha sido estudiado en esta especie. El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar cuatro sistemas de producción de pimiento morrón generados mediante dos arreglos del dosel (en forma de escalera y uniforme) y dos densidades de plantación (6 y 8 plantas·m-2). Se utilizó el cultivar &#8216;Cannon&#8217;. El diseño experimental utilizado fue parcelas divididas en bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones. En las parcelas grandes se ubicaron los arreglos de las hileras de plantas y en las subparcelas las densidades. Con el arreglo escaleriforme incrementó el rendimiento por unidad de superficie respecto del testigo (uniforme) al lograr más frutos amarrados por planta, sin disminución en su peso. Bajo esta disposición de plantas, el aumento de densidad de 6 a 8 plantas·m-2 no incrementó el rendimiento. El mayor rendimiento obtenido fue de 12 kg·m-2 con 6 plantas·m-2 de invernadero en un periodo de cuatro meses, de trasplante al final de la cosecha. Lo anterior sugiere la posibilidad de establecer tres ciclos de cultivo al año, con rendimiento anual superior al de los sistemas de producción que se manejan actualmente en invernadero.]]></p></abstract>
