Las peridotitas del manto - principalmente lherzolitas de espinela - se encuentran como xenolitos que fueron acarreados hasta la superficie por magmas máficos alcalinos de intraplaca. Características sobresalientes de los xenolitos de Santo Domingo, en comparación con otras localidades con xenolitos del centro y norte de México, son su textura porfidoclástica y la abundancia de megacristales de kaersutita. Xenolitos compuestos, en donde vetillas de hornblendita cortan a la foliación de las peridotitas, demuestran que las fases hidratadas (kaersutita, flogopita y pargasita) provienen del manto. Los xenolitos de peridotitas cizalladas en el manto de los maares Joya de los Contreras, Santo Domingo y Joya Prieta presentan metasomatismo modal que se expresa en mayor o menor medida con la presencia de anfíboles y/o mica que se asocian espacialmente a los cristales de espinela y clinopiroxeno. En todos los xenolitos del manto estudiados se encontraron cantidades traza de sulfuros ricos en níquel con formas irregulares o de "gota" en los espacios intracristalinos en el olivino, o como inclusiones aisladas en el clinopiroxeno. La presencia de sulfuros no había sido previamente reportada en los xenolitos del manto de México. En los conjuntos de xenolitos del manto del campo volcánico de Santo Domingo hay evidencias claras de la interacción con fluidos, pero este fenómeno no afectó de manera uniforme a la región del manto en donde los xenolitos fueron incorporados en el magma. La indicación más clara acerca del origen del metasomatismo la dan las vetas de hornblendita que se observan en algunas de las peridotitas y la presencia de megacristales de kaersutita. Las vetas indican que el metasomatismo sucedió en el manto superior y la presencia de minerales hidratados diseminados en la lherzolita así como las indicaciones sutiles de metasomatismo críptico en algunas muestras, sugieren la existencia de aureolas zonificadas alrededor de estos filones. El origen de los diques de hornblendita parece estar asociado a las primeras fases de volcanismo de intraplaca en la región.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The Santo Domingo volcanic field consists of at least four Quaternary maars: Santo Domingo, Joya de los Contreras, El Banco and Joya Prieta, as well as a cinder cone and associated lava flows (La Pólvora). Mantle peridotites mainly spinel lherzolite - occur as xenoliths that were carried to the surface by mafic alkalic intraplate magmas. Outstanding features of the xenoliths of Santo Domingo, compared with other xenolith localities in central and northern Mexico, are the porphyroclastic texture, abundance of kaersutite megacrysts. Composite xenoliths, wherein hornblendite veinlets cut across the foliation in the peridotite, show that the hydrated phases come from the mantle. Composite xenoliths, where hornblende veinlets cut across the mylonitic foliation in the peridotite, show that the hydrated phases come from the mantle. Xenoliths of sheared peridotites collected at Joya de los Contreras, Santo Domingo and Joya Prieta maars display modal metasomatism evidenced by the presence, to a greater or lesser extent, of crystals of amphibole (kaersutite and/or pargasite) and phlogopite. The hydrated phases are spatially associated with spinel and/or clinopyroxene crystals. All the studied mantle xenoliths contain trace amounts of Ni-rich sulphides, which have irregularor bleb-like shapes. Sulphides occur in the intracrystalline spaces of olivine crystals or as isolated inclusions in clinopyroxene. Sulphides in mantle xenoliths from Mexico have not been previously reported. There is clear evidence of interaction with fluids in the mantle xenoliths from the Santo Domingo volcanic field. However, metasomatism was not pervasive in the mantle region where the xenoliths were incorporated in the transporting magma. The most important clues about how the mantle was metasomatized are the presence of hornblendite veinlets in some of the peridotites and the occurrence of kaersutite megacrysts. The veinlets indicate that the metasomatism was developed in the upper mantle and the occurrence of some peridotites with disseminated hydrous minerals, as well as peridotites with cryptic metasomatism, suggest the existence of zoning in a metasomatic aureole around the veinlets. Hornblendite dikes originated from magmas related to the first pulses of intraplate magmatism in the region.]]></p></abstract>
