<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1026-87742015000300415&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S1026-87742015000300415&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S1026-87742015000300415&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN La porción sur de la Cordillera Frontal de San Juan comprende algunas de las mejores exposiciones del Grupo Choiyoi, la contraparte eruptiva de una gran provincia plutono-volcánica silícica de edad pérmico-triásica desarrollada sobre el margen sudoccidental de Gondwana. Estudios estratigráficos, petrológicos y geocronológicos permitieron reconocer aspectos de su historia eruptiva y evolución petrogenética. Los productos más comunes son ignimbritas soldadas y flujos de lava riolíticos y, con menor desarrollo, depósitos freatomagmáticos, sedimentos volcaniclásticos e intrusivos subvolcánicos. Los volúmenes eruptivos, y probablemente el flujo magmático, fueron en aumento desde el emplazamiento de coladas andesíticas, domos riolíticos e ignimbritas de pequeño volumen intercalados entre sedimentos volcaniclásticos, hasta sucesiones casi ininterrumpidas de potentes flujos riolíticos e ignimbritas relacionadas a colapso volcano-tectónico. La actividad volcánica se inició a los ca. 290 Ma con posterioridad a la fase orogénica San Rafael como lo sugieren datos paleontológicos y radiométricos previos. Una nueva edad U-Pb SHRIMP de 265 ± 2 Ma en circones de los niveles superiores de la secuencia indica que la duración del volcanismo en el área fue de alrededor de 25 millones de años. Geoquímicamente, la sucesión ígnea muestra composición intermedia a silícica (&gt;65% SiO2), con tendencia a la acidificación hacia los términos cada vez más jóvenes. Comprende riolitas, dacitas y traquidacitas, en su mayoría de alto K, hiperaluminosas y de afinidad calcoalcalina a toleítica. Los contenidos en elementos mayores y traza sugieren que los magmas fueron emplazados en una corteza no engrosada y evolucionaron mayormente por procesos de cristalización fraccionada. Los patrones de elementos traza muestran enriquecimiento en elementos de radio iónico grande (Cs, Ba, Rb, K) respecto de elementos de alto potencial iónico (HFSE) y depresiones en Nb, Ta y Ti, rasgo típico de series orogénicas. Tendencias crecientes en HFSE (Nb, Ta, Y) hacia los términos superiores indican una transición hacia un marco de intraplaca. Este cambio composicional se relacionaría con pulsos magmáticos cada vez más voluminosos y diferenciados a medida que el sistema de arco fue madurando y a un régimen tectónico progresivamente extensional relacionado a subducción. Una explicación posible a las variaciones geológicas y petrológicas observadas es el retroceso de la placa en subducción (rollback) en las fases finales de la orogenia gondwánica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT The southern portion of the Cordillera Frontal of San Juan (western Argentina) comprises some of the best exposures of the Choiyoi Group, the eruptive counterpart of a large silicic plutono-volcanic province of Permian-Triassic age developed on the southwestern margin of Gondwana. Stratigraphic, petrologic, and geochronologic studies allowed to recognize aspects of the physical volcanology, eruptive history, and petrogenetic evolution of this unit. The most common rocks are welded rhyolitic ignimbrites and lava flows. Phreatomagmatic deposits, subvolcanic intrusions and volcaniclastic sediments are less common. The eruptive volumes increased gradually from the emplacement of andesitic flows, rhyolite domes and ignimbrites intercalated between relatively thin sequences of volcaniclastic sediments, to almost uninterrupted successions of voluminous rhyolitic flows and thick ignimbrites related to volcano-tectonic collapse events. The volcanic activity began at ca. 290 Ma following the San Rafael orogenic phase as suggested by previously reported paleontological and radiometric data. A new U-Pb SHRIMP zircon age from the upper levels of the sequence with a value of 265 ± 2 Ma suggests that the duration of volcanism was about 25 m.y. Geochemically the succession shows a restricted compositional spectrum. All units have intermediate to silicic composition (&gt;65% SiO2) with a clear acidification trend toward increasingly younger terms. It corresponds to rhyolites, dacites and traquidacites, mostly of high-K calc-alkaline and peraluminous affinities. Major and trace element contents suggest that magmas were emplaced in a non-thickened crust and evolved mainly through fractional crystallization processes. Trace element patterns show enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (Cs, Ba, Rb, K) in relation to high field strength elements (HFSE) and depressions in Nb, Ta and Ti, typical features of orogenic series. Progressive enrichment in HFSE (Nb, Ta, Y) with age suggests an increase in the within-plate affinity. This compositional change would relate to increasingly voluminous and differentiated magmatic pulses generated as a consequence of the arc system maturation and to a subduction related, progressively extensional tectonic regime. A plausible explanation to the observed variations is the retreating of the subducted slab (slab rollback) in the final stages of Gondwana orogeny.]]></p></abstract>
