In this study, pathological findings of a thyroid adenocarcinoma in a pheasant versicolor (Phasianus versicolor) are described in order to be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic diseases in wild birds of the Galliform order. The anatomicopathological findings belonged to a six year old male pheasant, which showed respiratory difficulty without secretion 24 h before its death. At necropsy, a non-encapsulated soft tissue multinodular mass was found at tracheal bifurcation, extending to the cranial area of lungs and left side costal bones. According to the histological features and its location, the diagnosis is consistent with thyroid follicular adenocarcinoma. The present study will be useful for the differential diagnosis of chronic diseases in the pheasant versicolor species.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Diversos tipos de adenocarcinomas se han descrito en diferentes especies, pero los adenocarcinomas tiroideos son raros en aves. Aquí se describen hallazgos patológicos de un adenocarcinoma tiroideo en faisán versicolor (Phaisanus versicolor), para considerarlo en el diagnóstico diferencial de enfermedades crónicas en aves silvestres del orden Galliforme. El hallazgo anatomopatológico se describe en un faisán macho, de seis años de edad, que presentó dificultad respiratoria sin secreción 24 horas antes de morir. A la necropsia se halló masa multinodular no encapsulada de consistencia suave, desde la bifurcación de la tráquea, que se extiende hacia la parte craneal de los pulmones, hasta la cara interna de los huesos costales del lado izquierdo. Las características histológicas y localización de la neoplasia establecieron el diagnóstico de adenocarcinoma tiroideo con patrón folicular. Este trabajo deja el precedente de una lesi&oacute;n que puede incluirse en el diagn&oacute;stico diferencial de enfermedades cr&oacute;nicas para la especie fais&aacute;n versicolor</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Palabras clave: Adenocarcinoma Folicular, Tiroides, Fais&aacute;n Versicolor.</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Introducci&oacute;n</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Existen factores que predisponen a los adenocarcinomas en las aves; por ejemplo, algunas gallinas desarrollaron adenocarcinomas faringoesof&aacute;gicos, g&aacute;stricos y hep&aacute;ticos, que han sido asociados con el consumo de agua nitrificada y acidificada, por lo que se concluye que el consumo de contaminantes influye en la aparici&oacute;n del efecto carcinog&eacute;nico.<sup>1</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En otro estudio se evalu&oacute; el efecto del fotoperiodo junto con tratamientos con melatonina y se observ&oacute; que ambos influyen en el desarrollo de adenocarcinomas ov&aacute;ricos en pavos <i>(Meleagridis gallopavo), </i>por ello se concluye que periodos largos de luz propician la presentaci&oacute;n de adenocarcinomas ov&aacute;ricos y que los periodos cortos detienen y revierten su desarrollo; asimismo, el tratamiento con melatonina ex&oacute;gena puede atenuar su crecimiento.<sup>2</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se ha observado que el virus de la leucosis aviar puede causar neoplasias de c&eacute;lulas epiteliales y c&eacute;lulas de la granulosa del ovario,<sup>3,4</sup> asimismo, ocasionan hepatocarcinomas, adenocarcinoma de p&aacute;ncreas, carcinomas de t&uacute;bulos semin&iacute;feros y carcinomas de c&eacute;lulas escamosas de la piel.<sup>3</sup> En gallinas infectadas con el virus de la leucosis aviar del subgrupo F como los RAV&#150;61 y el de la leucosis aviar del fais&aacute;n, desarrollaron fibrosarcomas, nefroblastomas, osteopetrosis, linfomas de c&eacute;lulas B y gran incidencia de un problema proliferativo en pulm&oacute;n.<sup>4</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se han descrito diversos tipos de adenocarcinomas en varias especies de aves. Los adenocarcinomas en ri&ntilde;&oacute;n constituyen las neoplasias con mayor frecuencia en el perico australiano <i>(Mellopsitacus undulatus), </i>machos, de edad adulta.<sup>5</sup> Freeman <i>et al.<sup>6</sup> </i>describieron un caso en el que un adenocarcinoma renal caus&oacute; atrofia muscular y osteopenia.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Tambi&eacute;n se han descrito adenocarcinomas pancre&aacute;ticos en un loro frente amarilla <i>(Amazona ochrocephala) </i>,<sup>7</sup> en un perico australiano <i>(Mellopsitacus undulatus)</i><sup>8</sup> y en un pato mandar&iacute;n.<sup>9</sup> En patos se han descrito otros tipos de adenocarcinomas como el neumocitoide tipo 2 y otro de c&eacute;lulas ciliadas con metaplasia escamosa en pulm&oacute;n.<sup>9</sup></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El adenocarcinoma g&aacute;strico ha sido notificado en m&uacute;ltiples ocasiones en el Loro Mejillas Grises <i>(Brotogeris </i>spp). Los signos cl&iacute;nicos de este tipo de neoplasia muestran p&eacute;rdida de peso y v&oacute;mito.<sup>5</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los adenocarcinomas g&aacute;stricos tambi&eacute;n se han notificado en los Loros Frente Dorada <i>(Aratinga aurea),</i><sup>10</sup> en el Ping&uuml;ino de Humboldt <i>(Spheniscus humboldti), </i>en el B&uacute;ho Cornudo <i>(Bubo virginianus)<sup>11</sup> </i>y en otros psit&aacute;cidos.<sup>12</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Existen informes de colangiocarcinomas en Conuro   de  Frente  Dorada   <i>(Aratinga  aurea)</i><sup>6</sup>  y  en Loros Amazona (<i>Amazona festiva y A. xanthops</i>).<sup>13,14</sup> </font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los adenocarcinomas en el aparato reproductor se han descrito en ovarios de Perico Australiano<sup>5</sup> y en la Ninfa <i>(Nymphicus hollandicus), </i>con metaplasia asociada con queratosis esternal. Sin embargo, la mayor incidencia de adenocarcinoma ov&aacute;rico se ha observado en gallinas con carcinog&eacute;nesis espont&aacute;nea del ovario.<sup>16&#150;18</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Tambi&eacute;n se han registrado cistadenocarcinomas en sacos a&eacute;reos<sup>19,20</sup> de cacat&uacute;as y adenocarcinoma en la regi&oacute;n axilar de una Cacat&uacute;a Moluca <i>(Cacatua </i><i>moluccencis)</i>.<sup>21</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los adenocarcinomas tiroideos son raros en aves, pero se han descrito en Pericos Australianos<sup>5</sup> y en aves rapaces. En un estudio con aves de presa se hizo seguimiento de lesiones neopl&aacute;sicas que revelaron s&oacute;lo dos casos de neoplasia en la gl&aacute;ndula tiroides.<sup>22</sup> Recientemente se describi&oacute; un adenocarcinoma tiroideo en un &Aacute;guila Americana <i>(Haliaeetus lecucocephalus)</i><sup>23</sup> y en un Halc&oacute;n Sacre <i>(Falco cherrug).</i><sup>22</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En los animales mam&iacute;feros dom&eacute;sticos se sugiere que la incidencia de tumores tiroideos no neopl&aacute;sicos es m&aacute;s alta en lugares donde se presenta deficiencia de yodo y los animales est&aacute;n confinados por largos periodos, mientras que los tumores tiroideos de origen neopl&aacute;sico se observan con mayor frecuencia en animales de edad avanzada. Tambi&eacute;n se menciona que la mayor&iacute;a de los animales con tumores tiroideos son adultos o de edad avanzada.<sup>24</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los carcinomas tiroideos se presentan de manera recurrente en perros y gatos, siendo m&aacute;s susceptibles los primeros.<sup>24</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El aspecto macrosc&oacute;pico de estos tipos de carcinomas tiroideos es de crecimiento multinodular burdo con &aacute;reas grandes de hemorragias y necrosis. El crecimiento unilateral duplica la frecuencia del crecimiento bilateral. Los carcinomas son mal encapsulados e invaden localmente la pared de la tr&aacute;quea, los m&uacute;sculos cervicales, la laringe, los nervios y los vasos sangu&iacute;neos. La mayor&iacute;a de tumores de tiroides descritos en mam&iacute;feros dom&eacute;sticos tienen su origen en las c&eacute;lulas foliculares, en tanto que los tumores de tiroides derivados de las c&eacute;lulas C o parafoliculares son frecuentes en toros adultos; en cuanto a los tumores originados de los ductos tiroglosos remanentes, se menciona que son raros en los animales dom&eacute;sticos, pero han sido descritos en perros.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La clasificaci&oacute;n de los carcinomas tiroideos se realiza con base en el patr&oacute;n y tipo de crecimiento histol&oacute;gico, se dividen en: adenocarcinoma folicular, carcinoma papilar, carcinoma celular compacto o s&oacute;lido, carcinoma tiroideo mal diferenciado, carcinoma de c&eacute;lulas peque&ntilde;as, carcinoma de c&eacute;lulas gigantes y tumor mixto maligno de tiroides.<sup>25</sup></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El adenocarcinoma folicular tiene un componente celular en su mayor&iacute;a arreglado en forma folicular. Las c&eacute;lulas tumorales son de tama&ntilde;o y forma variable, de cuboidales a columnares y forman fol&iacute;culos que var&iacute;an en tama&ntilde;o, forma y contenido coloidal con m&iacute;nima actividad mit&oacute;tica. <sup>24</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La dificultad de diagnosticar enfermedades que afectan &oacute;rganos internos de las aves por la ambig&uuml;edad de sus signos, por lo regular trae como consecuencia la muerte repentina del ave, por ello el conocimiento de nuevos padecimientos ayuda a ampliar las enfermedades diferenciales entre Galliformes dom&eacute;sticos o silvestres.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El objetivo de este trabajo fue evidenciar la presencia de otras enfermedades neopl&aacute;sicas presentes en aves silvestres del orden Galliforme, con respecto de las neoplasias descritas en Galliformes dom&eacute;sticos y silvestres. Esta informaci&oacute;n apoyar&aacute; al diagn&oacute;stico diferencial en enfermedades cr&oacute;nicas de las aves que, por lo general, no manifiestan signos tempranos de enfermedad.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b><i>Caso cl&iacute;nico</i></b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Un Fais&aacute;n Versicolor <i>(Phaisanus versicolor), </i>macho, de seis a&ntilde;os de edad, mantenido como ave de ornato en la ciudad de M&eacute;xico, con signos de dificultad respiratoria, boqueo y ausencia de secreciones en el aparato respiratorio superior, muri&oacute; en menos de 24 h.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">A la necropsia se observ&oacute; presencia de hemorragias petequiales difusas en tejido subcut&aacute;neo de la zona del cuello y masa multinodular de casi 7 cm de di&aacute;metro, de color blanco amarillento, semejando un material caseoso muy friable; el tumor se extend&iacute;a a la cavidad tor&aacute;cica desde la altura de la bifurcaci&oacute;n de la tr&aacute;quea hasta la parte craneal de los pulmones. En los m&uacute;sculos de la clav&iacute;cula e intercostales anteriores, se encontr&oacute; tejido de caracter&iacute;sticas compatibles con la masa tor&aacute;cica (<a href="#f1">Figura 1</a>). Ambos pulmones presentaron consistencia firme en el tercio anterior, con presencia de n&oacute;dulos de tejido blanquecino sugerente de met&aacute;stasis. En el h&iacute;gado se observ&oacute; lesi&oacute;n nodular de color blanquecino y en forma de flor, con dimensi&oacute;n de 0.3 por 0.2 cm.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f1"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/vetmex/v39n4/a8f1.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b><i>Histopatolog&iacute;a</i></b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El estudio histopatol&oacute;gico revel&oacute; que la masa de la bifurcaci&oacute;n de la tr&aacute;quea correspond&iacute;a a proliferaci&oacute;n tumoral de c&eacute;lulas epiteliales pleom&oacute;rficas, que van de c&uacute;bicas a columnares; las c&eacute;lulas est&aacute;n arregladas en forma de fol&iacute;culos de varios tama&ntilde;os, como cordones, en rosetas, en papilas y en seudogl&aacute;ndulas. Las c&eacute;lulas tumorales se encontraron sostenidas por un estroma de tejido conectivo muy vascularizado. La masa tumoral no present&oacute; bordes definidos y en algunas zonas se observaron focos de necrosis del tejido tumoral (<a href="#f2">Figuras 2</a> y <a href="#f3">3</a>) compatibles con adenocarcinoma folicular.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f2"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/vetmex/v39n4/a8f2.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f3"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/vetmex/v39n4/a8f3.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En pulmones y m&eacute;dula &oacute;sea se encontr&oacute; presencia de tejido neopl&aacute;sico de naturaleza histol&oacute;gica semejante al adenocarcinoma folicular. Sin embargo, el arreglo de las c&eacute;lulas tumorales era m&aacute;s s&oacute;lido y formaba cordones; en el pulm&oacute;n izquierdo y en m&eacute;dula &oacute;sea se encontraron numerosas c&eacute;lulas que presentaban queratinizaci&oacute;n (<a href="#f4">Figuras 4</a> y <a href="#f5">5</a>). En el h&iacute;gado el cambio anatomopatol&oacute;gico en el par&eacute;nquima correspondi&oacute; a una zona de fibrosis con presencia de vasos sangu&iacute;neos de nueva formaci&oacute;n y abundante col&aacute;gena.</font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f4"></a></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/vetmex/v39n4/a8f4.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><a name="f5"></a></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p align="center"><font face="verdana" size="2"><img src="/img/revistas/vetmex/v39n4/a8f5.jpg"></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">&nbsp;</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2"><b>Discusi&oacute;n</b></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">El crecimiento neopl&aacute;sico de la tiroides puede ser unilateral o bilatera<sup>l5,25</sup> y a &eacute;ste se asocian algunos signos cl&iacute;nicos que incluyen regurgitaci&oacute;n y disnea acompa&ntilde;ada generalmente de ruidos respiratorios,<sup>22</sup> en este caso hay dificultad respiratoria debido a la obstrucci&oacute;n de la masa neopl&aacute;sica en el &aacute;rea de la bifurcaci&oacute;n de la tr&aacute;quea.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En humanos, las neoplasias en la tiroides son de comportamiento maligno.<sup>26</sup> Los carcinomas tiroideos en los humanos conllevan a distorsi&oacute;n y alargamiento de la gl&aacute;ndula tiroides, la masa es firme y de color gris&#150;blanquecino con l&iacute;mites indeterminados. En el caso del fais&aacute;n, el crecimiento fue multinodular, de crecimiento expansivo, con invasi&oacute;n a otros tejidos y met&aacute;stasis a otros &oacute;rganos.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los aspectos macrosc&oacute;pico y microsc&oacute;pico del tumor coinciden con lo descrito en la clasificaci&oacute;n en mam&iacute;feros.<sup>25</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">La presencia de tejido neopl&aacute;sico en pulmones tambi&eacute;n ha sido descrita en los carcinomas tiroideos de los mam&iacute;feros, principalmente por la formaci&oacute;n de microtrombos de c&eacute;lulas neopl&aacute;sicas.<sup>25</sup> La invasi&oacute;n en la m&eacute;dula &oacute;sea corresponde a un proceso de continuidad sin descartar una met&aacute;stasis por microtrombos neopl&aacute;sicos.</font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Los adenocarcinomas tiroideos son raros y se encuentran poco caracterizados.<sup>26</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">En humanos, estos tumores tiroideos poco diferenciados y anapl&aacute;sticos son muy agresivos y letales.<sup>27</sup> Los carcinomas de tiroides pueden estar compuestos por c&eacute;lulas poco diferenciadas que forman nidos y trab&eacute;culas que infiltran la c&aacute;psula y el tejido circundante. Tambi&eacute;n se observan estructuras papilares y qu&iacute;sticas en algunas estructuras.<sup>28</sup> Pueden observarse estructuras nodulares, poco encapsuladas, invasivas y muy vascularizadas<sup>22</sup> o presentar c&eacute;lulas cuboidales y epiteliales. El diagn&oacute;stico del carcinoma de este estudio se bas&oacute; en la anaplasia de las c&eacute;lulas y sustituci&oacute;n de la arquitectura normal de la gl&aacute;ndula.<sup>5</sup></font></p>     <p align="justify"><font face="verdana" size="2">Se concluye que debido a que los Galliformes silvestres por lo regular muestran signos inespec&iacute;ficos, que dif&iacute;cilmente se evidencian en etapas tempranas de la enfermedad, la presencia de neoplasias en ellos debe ser considerada durante la exploraci&oacute;n f&iacute;sica y el uso de estudios complementarios para contribuir al diagn&oacute;stico diferencial de enfermedades cr&oacute;nicas en aves silvestres de esta especie.</font></p>     ]]></body>
