MATERIALES Y MÉTODOS: Estudio observacional, transversal, prospectivo y comparativo efectuado en pacientes con síndrome de ovario poliquístico y un grupo control. Ensayo basado en respuestas al cuestionario validado del Índice de Calidad del Sueño de Pittsburgh (PSQI) que valora siete aspectos del sueño: calidad subjetiva, latencia, duración, eficiencia, perturbaciones del sueño, medicación hipnótica para conciliar el sueño y disfunción diurna. Las puntuaciones van de 0 a 21; más de cinco indican un deterioro en la calidad del sueño.  RESULTADOS: De las 260 pacientes con síndrome de ovario poliquístico, 205 (78.8%) obtuvieron un puntaje PSQI global mayor a 5, mientras que en el grupo de las 180 controles, 110 obtuvieron un puntaje PSQI global mayor a 5 (61.1%). La diferencia fue estadísticamente significativa (p &lt; 0.001). Las áreas más afectadas en las pacientes con síndrome de ovario poliquístico fueron: latencia del sueño, perturbaciones del sueño y disfunción diurna.  CONCLUSIONES: Las pacientes con síndrome de ovario poliquístico tienen mayor prevalencia de trastornos del sueño; por tanto, afectación en la calidad de vida. Diseñar cuestionarios y validarlos para valorar la calidad del sueño es determinante en todas las pacientes con síndrome de ovario poliquístico.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  OBJECTIVE: To determine if sleep disorders are more prevalent in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) than in a control group.  METHODS AND MATERIALS: This observational, cross-sectional, prospective, comparative study was conducted with patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and a control group. The study was based on responses to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, which assesses seven aspects of sleep: subjective quality, latency, duration, efficiency, disturbances, use of sleep aids, and daytime dysfunction. Scores range from 0 to 21, and scores above 5 indicate impaired sleep quality.  RESULTS: Among the 260 patients with PCOS, 205 (78.8%) had an overall PSQI score greater than 5. Among the 180 control participants, 110 (61.1%) had an overall PSQI score greater than 5. The difference was statistically significant (p &lt; 0.001). The areas most affected in patients with PCOS were sleep latency, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction.  CONCLUSIONS: Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome have a higher prevalence of sleep disorders, thereby affecting their quality of life. It is crucial to design and validate questionnaires that assess sleep quality in all patients with polycystic ovary syndrome.]]></p></abstract>
