En tiempos recientes ha surgido el interés por la búsqueda de biomarcadores que logren establecer el riesgo de padecer preeclampsia en semanas tempranas del embarazo.  OBJETIVO:  Revisar la bibliografía actual y describir los biomarcadores estudiados para identificar el riesgo de preeclampsia.  METODOLOGÍA:  Búsqueda en las bases de datos de PubMed y Lilacs con los términos MeSH en inglés &#8220;biomarkers&#8221;, &#8220;diagnosis&#8221; and &#8220;preeclampsia&#8221;, y en su correspondiente traducción al español en búsqueda de los biomarcadores investigados con el fin de identificar tempranamente a las pacientes en riesgo de preeclampsia.  RESULTADOS:  Se obtuvieron 55 artículos de los que se excluyeron 38 por duplicidad, títulos y resúmenes no pertinentes y protocolos de investigación; se utilizaron para el análisis 17 artículos y se recurrió a otros 8 para complementar la discusión.  CONCLUSIONES:  Los biomarcadores, sobre todo los relacionados con la angiogénesis, son decisivos para identificar el riesgo y diagnosticar preeclampsia en etapas tempranas del embarazo. Sin embargo, su aplicación clínica aún requiere más estudios para validar su eficacia.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  BACKGROUND:  Preeclampsia, a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, requires timely diagnosis to initiate strategies to minimize potential complications for mother and child. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the search for biomarkers that can identify the risk of preeclampsia in the early weeks of pregnancy.  OBJECTIVE:  To review the current literature and describe the biomarkers studied for the early diagnosis of pre-eclampsia.  METHODOLOGY:  PubMed and Lilacs databases were searched using the MeSH terms in English "biomarkers," "diagnosis," and "preeclampsia" and their corresponding Spanish translations to find biomarkers studied for the early diagnosis of preeclampsia.  RESULTS:  Fifty-five articles were obtained, of which 38 were excluded due to duplication, irrelevant titles and abstracts, and research protocols; 17 articles were used for analysis and 8 others were used to supplement the discussion.  CONCLUSIONS:  Biomarkers, especially those related to angiogenesis, are crucial for risk identification and diagnosis of preeclampsia in the early stages of pregnancy. However, their clinical application requires further studies to validate their efficacy.]]></p></abstract>
