Por ello, el objetivo de este trabajo fue detectar y cuantificar los niveles de Pb presentes en pinturas y suelos superficiales en parques y plazas públicas de la ciudad de Torreón, Coahuila, México, con el propósito de explorar fuentes alternativas de exposición en los niños de la ciudad. Fueron seleccionados 13 sitios públicos para la medición de Pb en pinturas en juegos infantiles, bancas, mesas, cordones de banquetas, estructuras decorativas y suelo natural superficial. Se empleó fluorescencia de rayos X en la modalidad de cuantificación de Pb para pinturas y suelos, según el caso. Doce de los 13 parques estudiados presentaron al menos una medición de Pb superior al valor de referencia de 1 mg/cm2 establecido por el Departamento de Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano de EUA para pinturas, siendo los colores blanco, azul y amarillo los que presentaron los mayores niveles de Pb (7.5, 7.0 y 6.8 mg/cm2, respectivamente), en tanto que sólo un parque presentó niveles de Pb superiores a 400 ppm en polvo superficial. En conclusión, en este trabajo se documenta el uso de pinturas contaminadas con Pb para el mantenimiento de sitios públicos en áreas de juego infantiles, así como la presencia del Pb en polvos superficiales, lo cual representa una fuente de exposición importante de los niños a este metal pesado.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal that contaminates the environment, with paint being a major source of exposure to this metal. Therefore, the aim of this study was to detect and quantify Pb levels in paints and superficial soils in public playgrounds in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, with the purpose of exploring alternative sources of Pb exposure. Thirteen public places were selected for the analysis of Pb in playground games, benches, tables, sidewalk paint, decorative structures, and natural superficial soil. A Niton XL3t XRF analyzer was used to quantify Pb according to the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions. Twelve of the 13 playgrounds studied had at least one Pb measure higher than the reference level of 1 mg/cm2 stablished by the USA Department of Housing and Urban Development for paints, being the colors white, blue and yellow the ones that showed the highest Pb levels (7.5, 7.0 y 6.8 mg/cm2, respectively), while only one playground showed Pb levels higher to 400 ppm in superficial dust. In conclusion, this research documents the use of Pb-based paints for the maintenance of public places in playgrounds, as well as the presence of Pb in superficial dust, which represents a considerable exposure source to this heavy metal for children.]]></p></abstract>
