El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar la presencia de éstos en el tracto digestivo de toninas (Tursiops truncatus) varadas en la isla del Carmen, Campeche durante el periodo 2019-2020, así como en peces que son parte de su dieta. De las toninas se extrajeron las cavidades gástricas de dos hembras y dos machos; los contenidos estomacales fueron tamizados y filtrados para contabilizar y clasificar los MP por forma, color y tamaño. El 100 % de los contenidos estomacales tuvieron microplásticos, con un total de 254 partículas; de estos, el 90.94 % (231) fueron fibras plásticas y el 9.05 % (23) fragmentos plásticos (red). El color más común fue el azul con 69 % (176); el intervalo de longitud de las fibras fue de 8.322 - 1466.4 µm. Una hembra cría con una longitud total de 165 cm presentó el mayor número de MP. Hubo diferencias significativas en el color de las fibras plásticas y fragmentos con la clase edad. No hubo diferencia significativa al comparar el sexo de las toninas con el número de fibras plásticas y fragmentos. También se encontraron fibras predominantemente azules en estómagos de peces presa capturados en la zona (Bagre marinus y Anisotremus virginicus). Este es el primer estudio realizado sobre el contenido de microplásticos en toninas para el sur del golfo de México, los cuales se asume que provienen de tierra adentro o de la zona norte de la Península de Yucatán.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT In Mexico, there is little data on the presence and abundance of microplastics (MP) in aquatic mammals. The objective of this work was to determine the presence of MP in the digestive tract of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) stranded on the coast of Carmen Island, Campeche, during the period 2019-2020, as well as in fish that are part of their diet. The gastric cavities of two females and two male bottlenose dolphins were extracted; the stomach contents were sieved and filtered to count and classify the MP by shape, color, and size. 100% of the stomach contents had microplastics, with a total of 254 particles; of these, 90.94% (231) were plastic fibers, and 9.05% (23) were plastic fragments (plastic net). The most common color of plastic particles was blue, with 69% (176); the fiber length range was 8.322 - 1466.4 µm. A calf female with a total length of 165 cm had the highest number of MP. There were significant differences in the color of the plastic fibers and fragments with the age class of the bottlenose dolphins. There was no significant difference when comparing the sex of the bottlenose dolphins with the number of plastic fibers and fragments. Predominantly blue fibers were also found in fish stomachs of preying collected from the same area (Bagre marinus and Anisotremus virginicus). This study is the first to examine the microplastic content of bottlenose dolphins in the in the southern Gulf of Mexico, which are assumed to come from inland or the Yucatan Peninsula&#8217;s northern part.]]></p></abstract>
