Dr. Manuel Cárdenas Loaeza passed away on January 17th of the present year. He was an unequaled figure of Mexican cardiology, as well as one of the most illustrious representatives of its golden era, that befall in the past half of the XX century. In fact, Dr. Cárdenas was a member of that generation who marked the transition between classical cardiology based on traditional clinic and talented inspiration and current cardiology funded more in experimental science, scientific method, statistical based evidence, technological development and prevention culture. Those, like myself, who had the honor to know him and work under his command, learned that under a hard and dry external crust, sometimes aggresive and other times sarcastic and mocker, beated a generous and solidary heart. Owner of a vast culture, sharp intelligence and acute discursive resources, to argue with him on diverse medical, cultural or historical topics, was always a thorny and irritating intelectual challenge, and yet gratifying.

In spite of the differences that opposed us since my times of resident and above the irreductible ideological and philosophical barriers, my affection and admiration for him was always rewarded with genuine estimation and unconditional respect. Every time we asked for his support, he assisted us, willing and generous, in diverse academic events of our Cardiovascular Unit of the Hospital Regional "1o de Octubre", ISSSTE, of the Asociación Mexicana para la Prevención de la Aterosclerosis y sus Complicaciones (AMPAC) and more recently of the Asociación Nacional de Cardiólogos al Servicio de los Trabajadores del Estado (ANCISSSTE).

With the death of Dr. Cárdenas, also dies an entire epoch of our cardiology, that in spite of its limitations, had a sense of grandeur and a thirst of transcendence, that our own era does not have.

In behalf of our Asociación Nacional de Cardiólogos de México (ANCAM) and the rest of Associations to whom this Journal provides forum and voice, and also in the name of Dr. José Manuel Enciso Muñoz, President of ANCAM and his Directive Board, the Editorial Committee of the Journal and its Editor in Chief, who undersigned this letter, we express our most sincere condolences to the Teacher's family, to his friends and to his colleagues and the officers of the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología "Ignacio Chávez", institution for which he worked indefatigably just to the end of his days.

May you rest finally in peace, beloved Teacher.
