El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar, en manzano Golden Delicious, el efecto del RPR sobre el rendimiento y calidad del fruto; así como cuánta agua se puede ahorrar en comparación con el riego normal. El trabajo se desarrolló en los ciclos 2008 y 2009 en un huerto del INIFAP en Bachiniva, Chihuahua, México. Se evaluaron tres tratamientos: uno de temporal, donde no se aplicó agua de riego (testigo), riego completo (RC) y el RPR donde se aplicó el 50% del RC, el riego se alternó de un lado al otro de la hilera del árbol cada vez que se realizó dicha actividad. Los resultados obtenidos mostraron que el rendimiento, calidad del fruto (diámetro del fruto polar y ecuatorial, firmeza y sólidos solubles totales), crecimiento vegetativo y área foliar fueron estadísticamente igual entre los tratamientos de RPR y RC, en comparación con el testigo que fue afectado negativamente. El ahorro real del agua aplicada en RPR fue del 21.3%, lo que equivale a 1.81 m3 árbol-1.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: Over exploitation of aquifers is a big problem in many arid and semi-arid zones of the world. In recent years, new strategies have been developed to optimize water use. One ofthese is partial root zone drying (PRD). The aim of this research was to determine the effect of PRD on apple yield and fruit quality and how much water can be save with this strategy. This work was done in Bachiniva, Chihuahua, Mexico, during 2008 and 2009. Three treatments were evaluated: control (only the rain), fully irrigated (FI) and partial root zone drying (PRD). In the case of PRD, the irrigation pipeline was alternated from one side of the tree row to the other during the growing season, applying only 50% of the water used for FI. Results showed that yield, fruit quality (polar and equatorial diameter, firmness and solid soluble solids), shoot growth and leaf area of PRD were not statistically different from those of FI. With PRD, it is possible to save 50% of the water applied through the irrigation system and reduce 21.3% of the total water used in the apple orchard.]]></p></abstract>
