La yaca (Artocarpus heterophyllus) es una fruta de importancia económica para Nayarit ya que concentra más del 90 % del cultivo a nivel nacional. En últimos años se ha detectado una muerte de ramas terminales en árboles de yaca por lo que el objetivo fue de esta investigación fue identificar al agente causal de muerte descendente en ramas de A. heterophyllus en el estado de Nayarit, México.  Materiales y Métodos.  A partir de una colección de cepas de Lasiodiplodia theobromae provenientes de Nayarit de huertos comerciales de yaca, mango (Mangifera indica), guanábana (Annona muricata), aguacate (Persea americana), y lima persa (Citrus latifolia) se evaluó la patogenicidad de L. theobromae, en árboles de yaca de un año. Los aislados se identificaron molecularmente por secuenciación de las regiones del espaciador de transcrito interno (cebadores ITS5 y ITS4) y del factor de elongación de traducción 1- alfa (TEF1; cebadores EF-728/EF-986).  Resultados.  Todos los aislados fueron patogénicos en yaca. LY1 y LG4, provenientes de frutos de yaca y guanábana, respectivamente mostraron alta agresividad en ramas. Los síntomas de muerte descendente se evidenciaron dos meses post-inoculación con pudrición de ápices, lesiones necróticas internas y fisuras de corteza en ramas y tallos, así como muerte del árbol. Las secuencias ITS y EF1-&#945; de los aislados recuperados de las pruebas de patogenicidad mostraron 99 a 100 % de similitud con secuencias publicadas previamente publicadas en el Gen Bank para L. theobromae.  Conclusión.  Este es primer reporte de L. theobromae como agente causal de muerte descendente de yaca A. heterophyllus en Nayarit, México.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background/Objective.  Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is an economically important fruit for Nayarit, accounting for over 90% of the national crop. Branch dieback has been detected in jackfruit trees in recent years, so the objective of this study was to identify the causative agent of branch dieback in A. heterophyllus in the state of Nayarit, Mexico.  Materials and Methods.  From a collection of Lasiodiplodia theobromae strains from commercial orchards of jackfruit, mango (Mangifera indica), soursop (Annona muricata), avocado (Persea americana), and Persian lime (Citrus latifolia) in Nayarit, the pathogenicity of L. theobromae was evaluated on one-year-old jackfruit trees. The isolates were molecularly identified by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS5 and ITS4 primers) and translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1; primers EF-728/EF-986) regions.  Results.  All isolates were pathogenic to jackfruit. LY1 and LG4, from jackfruit and soursop, respectively, showed high aggressiveness on branches. Dieback symptoms were evident two months post-inoculation, with shoot rot, internal necrotic lesions, and bark fissures on branches and stems, as well as tree death. The ITS and EF1-&#945; sequences of isolates recovered from pathogenicity testing showed 99-100% similarity to previously published sequences for L. theobromae in GenBank.  Conclusion.  This is the first report of L. theobromae as a causal agent of dieback of jackfruit A. heterophyllus in Nayarit, Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
