Based on the morphological characteristics, the fungus Puccinia sherardiana was identified. Uredinal stage was not detected during the observation period. Verification of the identity of the fungus was carried out by means of a phylogenetic analysis with part of a sequence of the 28S gene of ribosomal DNA. Pathogenicity tests were performed on S. angustifolia plants by inoculating teliospores. The inoculated plants developed symptoms and signs 15 days after inoculation, beginning with the presence of eruptive aecia in the epidermis of the host and later the formation of telia, completing Koch&#8217;s Postulates. The fungus P. sherardiana was previously described as a rust with a microcyclic life cycle on species of the genera Alcea, Malvastrum, Sidalcea and Sphaeralcea, belonging to the Malvaceae family; however, in this study the pathogen behaved differently. P. sherardiana will continue to be studied to determine if its life cycle is demicyclic in Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen. Durante los años 2017 y 2018, se recolectaron hojas y tallos con lesiones café oscuras conteniendo telios hipófilos rodeados por halos cloróticos en plantas de Sphaeralcea angustifolia localizadas en Axapusco, Estado de México. Con base en las características morfológicas, se identificó al hongo Puccinia sherardiana. No se detectó el estado uredinial durante el periodo de observación. La verificación de la identidad del hongo se realizó mediante un análisis filogenético con parte de una secuencia del gen 28S del ADN ribosómico. Se realizaron pruebas de patogenicidad en plantas de S. angustifolia mediante la inoculación de teliosporas. Las plantas inoculadas desarrollaron síntomas y signos 15 días después de la inoculación, iniciando con la presencia de ecios errumpentes en la epidermis del hospedante y posteriormente la formación de telios, completando los Postulados de Koch. El hongo P. sherardiana se describió previamente como una roya con ciclo de vida microcícliclo sobre especies de los géneros Alcea, Malvastrum, Sidalcea y Sphaeralcea, pertenecientes a la familia Malvaceae; sin embargo, en este estudio el patógeno tuvo un comportamiento diferente. Se continuará estudiando a P. sherardiana para determinar si en México su ciclo de vida es demicíclico.]]></p></abstract>
