A population with an adequate immunity is key to reduce the effects of COVID-19. Moreover, a healthy diet and an innocuous environment are factors for an adequate immunity. Healthier and more innocuous foods could be obtained with the extensive use of beneficial organisms on agricultural crops, helping reduce the use of agrochemicals and increasing the tolerance of plants to stress caused by abiotic and biotic factors. Nitrogen-fixating bacteria or free-living bacteria, mycorrhizae, endosymbiotic microorganisms, endophytes, entomopathogenic fungi and bacteria, pest predators and parasitoids, hyper parasitic viruses of pests and pathogens are some of the organisms that can induce the natural suppression of parasites, fixate nitrogen and optimize the capture of nutrients and water, among other ecosystemic benefits. This revision presents functions and properties of beneficial organisms and proposals are made for their use to benefit farmers and consumers, with the intention of contributing to the productive processes towards a sustainable agriculture.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen. Una población con buena inmunidad es clave para atenuar los efectos de COVID-19. A su vez, la alimentación sana y un ambiente inocuo son factores para una buena inmunidad. Alimentos más sanos e inocuos se podrían alcanzar con el uso extensivo de organismos benéficos en cultivos agrícolas permitiendo la reducción de agroquímicos e incrementando la tolerancia de plantas al estrés por factores abióticos y bióticos. Bacterias fijadoras de nitrógeno o de vida libre, micorrizas, microorganismos endosimbióticos, endófitos, hongos y bacterias entomopatógenas, depredadores y parasitoides de plagas, virus hiperparásitos de plagas y patógenos, son algunos de los organismos que pueden inducir la supresión natural de parásitos, fijar nitrógeno y optimizar la captura de nutrientes y agua, entre otros beneficios ecosistémicos. En esta revisión se exponen funciones y propiedades de organismos benéficos y se plantean propuestas para su aprovechamiento en beneficio de agricultores y consumidores. Con lo anterior, se estaría contribuyendo a mejorar los procesos productivos hacia una agricultura sustentable.]]></p></abstract>
