Material y métodos:  Estudio transversal y comparativo con 62 pacientes sanos. Se midieron los niveles de anticuerpos de antígeno de superficie de la hepatitis B (anti-HBs); valores &gt; 10 UI/mL se consideraron protectores.  Resultados:  Del total, 40 pacientes (64.5%) se vacunaron al nacimiento y 22 (35.5%) al año de edad. Los niveles séricos en el último grupo fueron estadísticamente más altos, sin encontrar diferencia por sexo. Veinticuatro pacientes (38.7%) alcanzaron niveles protectores, ocho (33.3%) del grupo vacunados al nacer, y 16 (66.6%) del otro grupo.  Conclusiones:  La vacunación contra hepatitis B a la edad de un año, parece generar mayores probabilidades de obtener títulos protectores de anticuerpos a la edad de 14 años.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Objective:  To compare the levels of protective antibodies against hepatitis B virus in 14-year-old patients, between those vaccinated at birth and those vaccinated at one year of age.  Material and methods:  Cross-sectional study with 62 healthy patients. Hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) antibody levels were measured; values &gt; 10 IU/mL were considered protective.  Results:  Of the total, 40 patients (64.5%) were vaccinated at birth and 22 (35.5%) at one year of age. Serum levels in the latter group were statistically higher, with no difference by sex. Twenty-four patients (38.7%) achieved protective levels, eight (33.3%) from the group vaccinated at birth, and 16 (66.6%) from the other group.  Conclusions:  Vaccination against hepatitis B at one year of age seems to generate a greater probability of obtaining protective antibody titers at the age of 14 years.]]></p></abstract>
