Al realizar su investigación en un laboratorio instalado en la cocina del castillo medieval de Tübingen, en Alemania, y bajo la dirección del profesor Felix Hoppe-Seyler, Miescher se centró principalmente en la composición de los núcleos celulares. Obtuvo material nuclear de las células del pus de vendajes quirúrgicos proporcionados por un hospital cercano. En 1869, Miescher describió una molécula nuclear completamente nueva que, a diferencia de las proteínas, contenía grandes cantidades de fósforo. Llamó a esta sustancia "nucleína", con lo que marcó la primera descripción del ADN. Miescher falleció mucho antes de que Watson, Crick, Wilkins y Franklin anunciaran, en 1953, el papel preciso que desempeñaba el ADN en las células. A través de su descubrimiento, Miescher sentó las bases para todas las investigaciones posteriores sobre el ADN.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In 1869, Friedrich Miescher, born in Basel, Switzerland, discovered a previously unknown phosphorus-rich substance in the nuclei of pus cells. Conducting his research in a laboratory set up in the kitchen of Tübingen’s medieval castle in Germany, and under the guidance by Professor Felix Hoppe-Seyler, Miescher primarily focused on the composition of cell nuclei. He obtained nuclear material by washing pus cells from surgical bandages provided by a nearby hospital. In 1869, Miescher described a completely new nuclear molecule that, unlike proteins, contained large amounts of phosphorus. He named this substance "nuclein," marking the first description of DNA. Miescher passed away long before Watson, Crick, Wilkins, and Franklin announced the precise role DNA played in cells in 1953. Through his discovery, Miescher laid the groundwork for all subsequent DNA research.]]></p></abstract>
