</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract Perfection, as the ultimate goal of human life, is certainly a point of encounter in the ethical theories of Spinoza and Leibniz. In addition, both philosophers assign a central role to rational knowledge as a medium to attain such goal. Starting from this basis, in the present paper we try to show that it is not a mere nominal or illusory similarity, but a relevant fact in order to clarify the relationship between both systems, in particular from an ethical point of view. The path we will follow in order to achieve this goal consist of an analysis of uses of the concept of perfection in both philosophers. First in the realm of metaphysics and then in the realm of ethics. To follow this route will allow us, on the one hand, to uncover the relationships of a family of concepts that connect ethics and metaphysics and to have a good understanding of the nature of the ethical goal arisen in this background. On the other hand, it will allow us to understand the role that the two philosophers assigned to knowledge in order to achieve the highest end of human being, that is, human perfection. Once we have clarified the uses of the concept of perfection, we will make a brief comparative analysis in order to show the points of convergence and divergence between the two theories.
</abstract>
