Actualmente, a nivel mundial ha afectado a más de 60 millones de personas. La COVID-19 es una enfermedad multi-sistémica; además de las manifestaciones respiratorias se han identificado diversas complicaciones neurológicas como encefalitis, evento cerebral isquémico y el síndrome de Guillain Barré. El síndrome de Guillain Barré es una condición de polineuropatías mediadas por inmunidad asociada frecuentemente a infecciones. Presentamos el caso de un hombre de 41 años que, cinco días posterior a presentar tos no productiva, cefalea, mialgias, artralgias, anosmia, ageusia, y aumento de la temperatura no cuantificada; inició con arreflexia y disminución de la fuerza en miembros inferiores que progresando a incapacidad para la deambulación y debilidad de miembros superiores; así como paresia facial bilateral. Se confirmó la infección por SARS-CoV-2 por medio de la reacción en cadena de la polimerasa en frotis orofaríngeo, y el análisis del líquido cefalorraquídeo reportó disociación albumino-citológica. El estudio de neuroconducción fue compatible con la variante polineuropatía desmielinizante inflamatoria aguda (AIDP por sus siglas en inglés). Fue tratado con inmunoglobulinas intravenosas por cinco días. A nivel mundial se han reportado numerosos casos del síndrome de Guillain Barré asociado a la infección por SARS-CoV-2, sin embargo existen pocos reportes en Latinoamérica.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In December 2019, the first cases of COVID-19 were reported in Wuhan, China. Up to now, it has affected over 60 million people worldwide. COVID-19 is a multi-systemic disease; in addition to respiratory manifestations, various neurological complications have been identified, including encephalitis, stroke, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a condition of immunemediated polyneuropathies frequently associated with infections. We present the case of a 41-year-old man that, after a 5-day history of non-productive cough, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, anosmia, ageusia, and non-quantified temperature rise; developed loss of tendon flexes and lower limbs weakness that progressed to walking disability, upper limbs weakness, and bilateral facial paresis. An oropharyngeal swab polymerase chain reaction confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, and the cerebrospinal analysis reported albuminocytologic dissociation. Nerve conduction studies showed acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP). He received a 5-day course of intravenous immune globulin. There have been numerous reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection worldwide; however, few cases have been reported in Latin America.]]></p></abstract>
