We conducted a scoping review using PubMed and Scopus about association between radiation exposure when performing a computed tomography (CT) scan and the risk of developing a malignant and/or benign neoplastic process. Some 17 retrospective cohort studies and two cross-sectional studies were included in the study. The malignant tumors associated with IR included leukemia and brain, thyroid, head, and neck cancer, mainly in patients under 18 years of age exposed to more than two CT scans of the head, chest, and abdominopelvic regions. Therefore, the studies described a higher risk of developing cancer in subjects exposed to the IR of a CT, with a focus on the pediatric population, female gender, and repeated exposures. It is necessary to conduct a greater number of clinical studies that include a longer follow-up time, broader types of neoplasms, and population-based subgroup analysis.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La radiación ionizante, energía transportada a través de los rayos emitidos por material radiactivo, puede aumentar el riesgo de desarrollar cáncer. Realizamos una revisión de alcance utilizando PubMed y Scopus sobre la asociación entre la exposición a la radiación al realizar una tomografía computarizada y el riesgo de desarrollar un proceso neoplásico maligno y/o benigno. Se incluyeron 17 estudios de cohortes retrospectivos y dos estudios transversales. Los tumores malignos asociados con la radiación ionizante incluyen leucemia y cáncer de cerebro, tiroides, cabeza y cuello, principalmente en pacientes menores de 18 años expuestos a más de dos tomografías computarizadas de la cabeza, tórax y regiones abdominopélvicas. Por lo tanto, los estudios describieron un mayor riesgo de desarrollar cáncer en sujetos expuestos a la radiación ionizante de una tomografía computarizada, con un enfoque en la población pediátrica, el sexo femenino y las exposiciones repetidas. Es necesario realizar un mayor número de estudios clínicos que incluyan un mayor tiempo de seguimiento, tipificaciones histológicas de la neoplasia y factores intrínsecos de la población.]]></p></abstract>
