La técnica de valoración ultrasonográfica más realizada es la medición del grosor muscular a nivel de la cara anterior del muslo con el paciente en decúbito supino.  Material y métodos:  estudio observacional, cuantitativo, prospectivo y analítico, en los pacientes ingresados a la UCI del Centro Médico «Lic. Adolfo López Mateos» del Instituto de Salud del Estado de México (ISEM) de agosto a octubre de 2020.  Resultados:  se obtuvo una muestra de 38 pacientes en quienes se realizaron mediciones del grosor muscular en el ingreso a la UCI y al día tres, cinco y siete. A nivel femoral, la media al ingreso fue 3.56 cm y al día siete 2.76 cm; en el músculo deltoides, la media al ingreso fue 1.23 mm y al día siete 0.93 mm. Se observaron diferencias significativas entre las tres determinaciones del grosor muscular deltoideo (p &#8804; 0.001), femoral (p &#8804; 0.001), así como para el balance de nitrógeno (p &#8804; 0.001).  Conclusión:  la determinación del grosor del músculo deltoides identifica pérdidas importantes de nitrógeno en los primeros tres días, sin correlación con balance nitrogenado positivo; el soporte nutricional monitorizado por balance nitrogenado y/o ultrasonido tienen tendencias de comportamiento similares.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract:  Introduction:  in critically ill patients, muscle loss is greater in the first days of intensive care unit (ICU) stay. The most performed ultrasound assessment technique is the measurement of muscle thickness at the level of the anterior thigh with the patient in the supine position.  Material and methods:  an observational, quantitative, prospective and analytical study, in patients admitted to the ICU of the «Lic. Adolfo López Mateos» ISEM Medical Center from August to October 2020.  Results:  a sample of 38 patients was obtained in whom muscle thickness measurements were made on admission to the ICU and on days three, five and seven, both at the femoral level where on admission the mean was 3.56 cm and on day seven it was 2.76 cm; the deltoid muscle, the mean at admission was 1.23 mm and at day seven, 0.93 mm. Significant differences were observed between the three determinations of muscle thickness deltoid (p &#8804; 0.001), femoral (p &#8804; 0.001), as well as for nitrogen balance (p &#8804; 0.001).  Conclusion:  the determination of the thickness of the deltoid muscle could be useful in the nutritional assessment of critically ill patients, having only a significant association to identify important nitrogen losses in the first three days, without correlation with positive nitrogen balance; nutritional support monitored by nitrogen balance and/or ultrasound have similar behavioral trends.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="pt"><p><![CDATA[Resumo:  Introdução:  em pacientes críticos, a perda muscular é maior nos primeiros dias de permanência na UTI. A técnica de avaliação ultrassonográfica mais frequentemente realizada é a medição da espessura muscular ao nível da face anterior da coxa com o paciente em posição supina.  Material e métodos:  realizou-se um estudo observacional, quantitativo, prospectivo e analítico em pacientes internados na UTI do Centro Médico Lic. Adolfo López Mateos ISEM de agosto a outubro de 2020.  Resultados:  obteve-se uma amostra de 38 pacientes nos quais foram realizadas medidas de espessura muscular na admissão na UTI e nos dias 3, 5 e 7, ambos no nível femoral onde na admissão a média foi de 3.56 cm e no dia 7 foi de 2.76 cm; no músculo deltoide a média na admissão foi de 1.23 mm e no 7º dia de 0.93 mm. Diferenças significativas foram observadas entre as 3 determinações da espessura do músculo deltóide (p &#8804; 0.001), femoral (p &#8804; 0.001), bem como para balanço de nitrogênio (p &#8804; 0.001).  Conclusão:  a determinação da espessura do músculo deltoide identifica perdas significativas de nitrogênio nos primeiros 3 dias, sem correlação com balanço de nitrogênio positivo; suporte nutricional monitorado por balanço de nitrogênio e/ou ultrassom apresentam tendências comportamentais semelhantes.]]></p></abstract>
