Comenzamos revisando algunos aspec tos generales de la veneración de los ancestros en las culturas del África subsahariana. Esto aporta un suelo común para acercarnos a la cultura yoruba en particular y analizar el culto a los ancestros a través del festival de Egúngún. En seguida, desarrollamos algunas claves con la finalidad de indagar las pautas que aporta el concepto de egúngún para entender la educación en esta tradición. Destacamos tres aspectos: la función de la oralidad en la construcción de sentidos de mundo; la formación del buen carácter de la persona; y la conmemoración del pasado como elemento constitutivo de la identidad individual y colectiva. Finalmente, propone mos apreciar el festival de Egúngún como una experiencia educativa que podría clasificarse dentro del ámbito de la educación informal.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: In this article we aim to explore the relationship between ancestry and education. We start reviewing some general aspects of ancestor worship in sub-Saharan African cultures. This provides a common ground for ap proaching Yoruba culture in particular and analyzing ancestor veneration through the Egúngún festival. Next, some key points are put forward to investigate the guidelines that the concept of egúngún provides to under stand education in this tradition. Three aspects are highlighted: the role of oral tradition in the construction of &#8220;world-senses&#8221;; the formation of a person&#8217;s good character; and the commemoration of the past as a constitu tive element of individual and collective identity. Finally, we propose to appreciate the Egúngún festival as an educational experience that could be classified within the scope of informal education.]]></p></abstract>
