The study compared the composition of sugars and °Brix in honey from Apis mellifera and Melipona beecheii bees, and a product marketed as bee honey in a local market. The sugar content was determined by highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a refractive index detector, and °Brix was determined using a refractometer. None of the honey analyzed had detectable levels of sucrose. The average concentration of fructose and glucose in honey was 36.4 and 28.9 g 100 g-1 for Apis mellifera, and 38.5 and 28.2 g 100 g-1 for honey from Melipona beecheii. For honey from the local market, the respective concentrations of these sugars were 7.5 and 17.0 g 100 g-1. The fructose:glucose ratio (F:G) was higher than one in Apis mellifera and Melipona beecheii honey, and 0.4 for honey from the local market. The three types of honey compared had similar values for °Brix. It is concluded that the honey under study by Apis mellifera and Melipona beecheii have similar qualities within international standards. In contrast, the product marketed as bee honey in the local market did not meet official regulations specifications and could not be considered authentic.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La fructosa y la glucosa son los principales azúcares en la miel de abeja y se espera que su concentración corresponda con las especificaciones de estándares oficiales. El objetivo del estudio fue comparar la composición de azúcares y los °Brix en mieles de abejas Apis mellifera y Melipona beecheii, y de un producto comercializado como miel de abeja en un mercado local. El contenido de azúcares se determinó por cromatografía de líquidos de alta resolución (HPLC) con detector de índice de refracción. Los °Brix se determinaron con refractómetro. Ninguna de las mieles analizadas presentó niveles detectables de sacarosa. La concentración promedio de fructosa y glucosa en la miel fue respectivamente 36.4 y 28.9 g 100 g-1 para Apis mellifera, y de 38.5 y 28.2 g 100 g-1 para Melipona beecheii. Para la miel del mercado local, las concentraciones respectivas de dichos azúcares fueron 7.5 y 17 g 100 g-1. La relación fructosa:glucosa (F:G) fue mayor que uno en las mieles de Apis mellifera y Melipona beecheii, y de 0.4 para la miel del mercado local. Los tres tipos de miel comparados tuvieron valores similares para °Brix. Se concluye que las mieles estudiadas de Apis mellifera y Melipona beecheii tienen calidades similares que están dentro de los estándares internacionales. En contraste, el producto comercializado como miel de abeja en el mercado local no cumple con las especificaciones de las normas oficiales y no puede ser considerada como auténtica.]]></p></abstract>
