Prostaglandin F2&#945; (PGF2&#945;) improves uterine health and increases the level of serum calcitriol in other species. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of sodium cloprostenol on serum calcium, metabolites of vitamin D and reproductive variables. Eighty multiparous Holstein cows were selected and randomized into two groups. The cows in Group 1 (n = 38) were treated with 500 µg of I M sodium cloprostenol, a synthetic analog of PGF2&#945;, at 1 and 48 h postpartum. Group 2 was the control group (n = 42). Blood samples were taken from 10 animals per group at 1, 3, 12, 24, 48 h and 7 d postcalving. The incidence of retained placenta, metritis and endometritis and the number of open days were recorded. The concentrations of Ca, P, Mg, calcidiol and calcitriol in the serum were evaluated using an analysis of variance for repeated measures design. The serum Ca concentration was increased up to normalized at day 7 in the PGF2&#945; group compared with the level in the control group. PGF2&#945; treatment increased the serum calcium concentration and reduced the number of open days, and thus, could be useful in preventing subclinical hypocalcemia and postpartum reproductive problems.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen La hipocalcemia subclínica ocurre con frecuencia en las vacas lecheras y las predispone a patologías reproductivas. La prostaglandina F2&#945; (PGF2&#945;) mejora la salud uterina e incrementa la concentración de calcitriol en otras especies. El objetivo fue evaluar el efecto de la administración de cloprostenol sódico, un análogo de PGF2&#945; sobre la concentración sérica de calcio, metabolitos de la vitamina D y variables reproductivas. Se utilizaron 80 vacas Holstein multíparas, las cuales se dividieron aleatoriamente en dos grupos. A las vacas del grupo 1 (n = 38) se les administró 500 µg de cloprostenol sódico vía IM en la primera hora posparto y una segunda aplicación 48 horas después. El grupo 2 fue el testigo (n = 42). En 10 animales de cada grupo se tomaron muestras de sangre 1, 3, 12, 24 y 48 horas después del parto, y a los 7 días posparto. Se registró la incidencia de retención de placenta, metritis, endometritis y número de días abiertos. Las concentraciones séricas de calcio (Ca), fósforo (P), magnesio (Mg), calcidiol y calcitriol se evaluaron mediante un análisis de varianza para un diseño de medidas repetidas. La concentración sérica de Ca aumentó al día 7 en los animales tratados con cloprostenol sódico, comparados con los animales del grupo testigo. El tratamiento con PGF&#945; aumentó la concentración sérica de calcio al séptimo día posparto y redujo el número de días abiertos, lo que podría ser de utilidad para prevenir hipocalcemia subclínica y problemas reproductivos posparto.]]></p></abstract>
