A raíz de estos desastres se ha criticado el uso de combustibles fósiles para satisfacer la demanda mundial de energía, planteándose la alternativa de sustituir petróleo por energías más limpias como la solar, la eólica y la hidráulica. Sin embargo, la adopción e implementación de este tipo de energías alternativas enfrenta ventajas y desventajas, tanto de carácter económico como estructural. Entre las primeras están las crecientes innovaciones tecnológicas que aumentan su atractivo en términos de los costos de oportunidad, y en las segundas están la baja competitividad económica que aún ofrecen las tecnologías alternativas (o limpias) en comparación con el petróleo. Este artículo aborda el origen de la sustitución desde un marco histórico, al postular que el auge tecnológico de las energías alternativas, en particular la energía solar, se vio inducido por el embargo petrolero que sufrieron los Estados Unidos en 1973 y que sirvió de aliciente para disparar la investigación en estas tecnologías. Siguiendo una metodología de búsqueda bibliométrica, se separa el análisis en seis etapas para demostrar que la subida del precio del petróleo detonó el auge de energías alternativas, pero conforme fue creciendo el número de artículos publicados, se logró consolidar el área de investigación, separándose del efecto precio.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract: In recent years the number of natural disasters caused by global warming has grown. Following these disasters, the use of fossil fuels to meet global energy demand has been criticized by considering the alternative of replacing oil with cleaner energy such as solar, wind and hydraulic. However, the adoption and implementation of alternative energies face both economic and structural advantages and disadvantages. Among the former are the growing technological innovations that increase its attractiveness in terms of opportunity costs, and in the latter are the low economic competitiveness that alternative (or clean) technologies still offer compared to oil. This article addresses the origin of the substitution from a historical framework by postulating that the technological boom of alternative energies, in particular solar energy was induced by the oil embargo that the United States suffered in 1973 and served as an incentive to fire research in these technologies. Following a bibliometric search methodology, the analysis is divided into six stages to demonstrate that the rise in the price of oil triggered the rise of alternative energy but as the number of published articles grew, the research area was consolidated, separating from the effect price.]]></p></abstract>
