</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract: Writer Xue Xinran has experienced the transition to a more empowered Chinese female population. Her non-fiction books tell true stories of ordinary women in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Her writings remind us of the great diversity of the country and its people, helping to dispel widespread opinions based on a small urban population. This article aims to draw attention to Xinran’s more than thirty years of historiographical work about Chinese women. Using Confucian definitions of a “good” woman as a starting point, we arrive at Xinran’s flesh-and-blood women, through a study of her radio program (Qing feng ye hua, 1989-1997) as well as two of her published works (Sky Burial: An Epic Love Story of Tibet, 2004, and Miss Chopsticks, 2008).
</abstract>
