The present work evaluated the selenium supplementation in kids in three study groups; One group was supplemented with selenium orally through intraruminal boluses (GBSe) (7 animals); a group was supplemented with selenium parenterally (GSeP) (7 animals); a control group without treatment (GC) (6 animals). Feed intake, weight gain, and immune response were measured trough serum IgG levels against a bacterin-toxoid. It was observed that the supplemented animals had higher levels of selenium in erythrocytes unlike the control group (GC) (p &lt;0.05), but no differences were observed associated with the route of administration of the mineral (p&gt; 0.05). Supplementation apparently did not have a clear effect on feed intake and weight gain (p&gt; 0.05). It was possible to increase the concentrations of the mineral in erythrocytes in the supplemented animals. The humoral immune response was influenced by selenium supplementation.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN México tiene deficiencia de selenio en la mayor parte de su territorio, esto tiene consecuencias en la salud de los animales, disminuyendo la inmunidad y los parámetros productivos, como el consumo de alimento y la ganancia de peso. El presente trabajo evaluó la suplementación de selenio en cabritos en tres grupos de estudio; un grupo fue suplementado con selenio en forma oral a través de bolos intarruminales (GBSe) (7 animales); otro grupo se suplementó con selenio de forma parenteral (GSeP) (7 animales) y un grupo control sin tratamiento (GC) (6 animales). Se evaluó el consumo de alimento, la ganancia de peso y la respuesta inmunitaria a través de la medición de IgG en suero contra una bacterina-toxoide. Se observó que los animales suplementados tuvieron mayores niveles de selenio en eritrocitos a diferencia del grupo control (GC) (p &lt; 0.05), pero no se observaron diferencias asociadas a la vía de administración del mineral (p &gt; 0.05). La suplementación al parecer no tuvo un efecto claro sobre el consumo de alimento y la ganancia de peso (p &gt; 0.05). Se logró aumentar las concentraciones del mineral en eritrocitos en los animales suplementados. La respuesta inmune humoral fue influenciada por la suplementación de selenio.]]></p></abstract>
