</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract: Although the history of the revolts that adopted Teresa Urrea, a Mexican woman with healing powers known as the “Saint of Cabora,” as their banner has been examined, this phenomenon has not been explored from the perspective of intellectual history. This article analyzes Tomochic! Redención! (1896), a work written and published by Teresa Urrea and Lauro Aguirre in El Paso, Texas. In their retelling of the rebellion and massacre that occurred in Tomóchic, Chihuahua (1892), the authors use certain concepts of spiritism to construct a rebellious thought. This politicization of spiritualism, a doctrine that attempts to harmonize science and religion, consists in the resignification of ideological materials and in the intensification of discursive features, directed especially to the articulation of an acute social conflict. This analysis focuses on the “Introduction” of the work, where a series of restructured figures are presented with new meanings in the context of the border struggle: the narrator -un prisoner afflicted by spiritual doubts-, a spirit that advises him and the visions that the narrator contemplates while sleeping. The hypothesis is advanced that this politicization of thought was a fairly generalized phenomenon in pre-revolutionary frontier journalism, the result of a process of ideological reinvention that accompanied the exile. The last decades of the Porfiriato created a situation in which exile, the growth of new conflicts and solidarities, as well as journalism collaborated to produce unprecedented ways of thinking, writing and agitating. Although little known, they represent a moment worthy of future research.
</abstract>
