</abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en">
Abstract This article historicizes the communication policies and the political communication of South American governments in the XXI century. In the first part of the period, the governments of the “left turn” held a public confrontation with the private national media. With the “right turn”, which began in 2015 in some countries, the new governments had the private media as allies. How to explain this change and what continuities and discontinuities exist between the countries? The text analyzes the cases of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador and Uruguay and reveals two issues. First, it points out that, despite the growth of global communication flows, the structure of the national media system is a powerful conditioning to understand the differences and similarities of the relations between governments and media companies in each country. Second, it proves that, beyond the massification of social and digital media, traditional media continue to be considered a key actor for governability.
</abstract>
