Consideraban la enfermedad como un desequilibrio corporal causado por seres celestes o del inframundo, y utilizaban plantas medicinales para restaurar el equilibrio y buscar una conexión divina. Entre estas plantas, las del género Ipomoea de la familia convolvulaceae destacaban por sus usos alimenticios, medicinales y religiosos, por lo que se consideraban fundamentales en las culturas prehispánicas. Hoy en día, los metabolitos secundarios de las plantas del género Ipomoea se estudian por sus propiedades biológicas con gran potencial en la medicina moderna, entre las que se incluyen actividades antimicrobianas, antifúngicas, anticancerígenas e hipoglucémicas. Esto subraya su importancia para el tratamiento de infecciones y enfermedades crónico-degenerativas de alta incidencia, como la diabetes y el cáncer, que afectan a la sociedad mexicana.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Pre-Hispanic societies developed a great knowledge of their environment which allowed them to prosper. They considered illness as a bodily imbalance caused by celestial or underworld beings and used medicinal plants to restore balance and seek a divine identity. Among these plants, those of the Ipomoea genus of the Convolvulaceae family stood out for their food, medicinal and religious ritual uses, being fundamental to pre-Hispanic cultures. Nowadays, secondary metabolites from plants of the Ipomoea genus are studied for their biological properties with great potential in modern medicine, including antimicrobial, antifungal, anticancer and hypoglycemic activities. This underlines its importance for the treatment of chronic-degenerative and high-incidence diseases, such as diabetes and cancer, that affect Mexican society.]]></p></abstract>
