Al respecto, es comúnmente sabido que algunas de las tierras más propensas a la degradación/desertificación y abandono después de actividades agrícolas son aquellas en donde el agua es un factor limitante. Es por esto que, a través de trabajos que se han realizado previamente, el presente manuscrito discute el caso de la Costa de Hermosillo, uno de los casos más simbólicos de abandono de tierras agrícolas en zonas áridas de México. Específicamente, se describe 1) cómo la literatura reporta la disminución drástica de tierras agrícolas entre el final del siglo pasado y el inicio del presente (más de 50,000 hectáreas abandonadas) y 2) cómo ha sido la evolución de la cubierta vegetal después de abandono en algunos de estos sitios.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The rapid population growth has resulted in the expansion and intensification of agricultural areas worldwide, modifying ecological processes in large extensions of land. In this regard, it is commonly known that some of the most prone lands to degradation/desertification and abandonment after agricultural activities are those where water is a limiting factor. This is why, through previously conducted studies, the present manuscript discusses the case of the Costa de Hermosillo, one of the most symbolic cases of agricultural land abandonment in arid regions of Mexico. Specifically, we describe 1) how literature reports the drastic reduction of agricultural lands between the end of the past century and the beginning of the present one (more than 50,000 abandoned hectares) and 2) how vegetation cover has evolved after abandonment in some of these sites.]]></p></abstract>
