El objetivo del presente estudio fue validar un instrumento piloto de medición para determinar la prevalencia de la adicción al teléfono inteligente entre bachilleres y universitarios, además de examinar su relación con las preferencias sensoriales (visual, auditiva, lectora, kinestésica). Se realizó un estudio con 141 estudiantes de bachillerato y universidad de México. Se aplicó una encuesta sobre adicción al celular y un cuestionario sobre las modalidades de percepción. Aunque el nivel de adicción promedio fue mayor en universitarios, no hubo diferencia significativa por género. La prevalencia de adicción general fue del 22 %, con &#8220;tolerancia&#8221; y &#8220;síndrome de abstinencia&#8221;, como síntomas más comunes, aunque sola la primera tuvo diferencia significativa estadística (P &lt; 0.05). Respecto a las preferencias sensoriales, las más indicadas fueron auditiva (29.6 %) y kinestésica (27.6 %), siendo la cantidad de uno y cuatro canales perceptivos, los más elegidos. Los universitarios prefirieron la información visual más que los bachilleres (P &lt; 0.05), mientras que la preferencia por la lectura/escritura fue mayor en bachilleres (P &lt; 0.05). Considerando la puntuación total obtenida en la encuesta como un indicador de adicción al celular, se observó que las personas que prefieren los contenidos visuales usan más el teléfono inteligente (&#961; = 0.20, P = 0.015), mientras que las que disfrutan de la lectura/escritura lo usan menos (&#961; = - 0.17, P = 0.048). Dichos hallazgos podrían guiar el desarrollo futuro de aplicaciones para estos dispositivos, de modo que los estudiantes reorienten el uso del teléfono inteligente en beneficio de su propio desarrollo, aprovechando los canales de percepción preferidos, aunque por supuesto, se necesitan más estudios similares en otras regiones de México.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract The smartphone plays a very important role in the lives of young people, which is of concern because of its effects on health and academic performance. The aim of the present study was to validate a pilot measurement instrument to determine the prevalence of smartphone addiction among high school and university students, in addition to examining its relationship with sensory preferences (visual, auditory, reading, kinesthetic). A study was conducted with 141 high school and university students in Mexico. A survey on cell phone addiction and a questionnaire on perception modalities were administered. Although the average level of addiction was higher in university students, there was no significant difference by gender. The prevalence of general addiction was 22 %, with &#8220;tolerance&#8221; and &#8220;withdrawal syndrome&#8221; as the most common symptoms, although only the former had a significant statistical difference (P &lt; 0.05). Regarding sensory preferences, the most indicated were auditory (29.6 %) and kinesthetic (27.6 %), with the number of one and four perceptual channels being the most chosen. University students preferred visual information more than high school students (P &lt; 0.05), while the preference for reading/writing was higher in high school students (P &lt; 0.05). Considering the total score obtained in the survey as an indicator of cell phone addiction, it was observed that people who prefer visual content use the smartphone more (&#961; = 0.20, P = 0.015), while those who enjoy reading/writing use it less (&#961; = - 0.17, P = 0.048). These findings could guide the future development of applications for these devices, so that students redirect smartphone use to benefit their own development, taking advantage of preferred perceptual channels, although of course, more similar studies are needed in other regions of Mexico.]]></p></abstract>
