El objetivo de esta iniciativa fue incrementar los conocimientos y percepción del riesgo de los alumnos de una escuela primaria en una localidad dedicada al cultivo de plantas ornamentales, para fomentar hábitos de higiene ambiental que reduzcan la exposición a plaguicidas.  Materiales y métodos: Entre abril y junio de 2024 se realizó una iniciativa educativa consistente en 5 sesiones basadas en elementos de educación popular, metodología niño-a-niño y aprendizaje significativo. Participaron 53 escolares de quinto y sexto grado de primaria. Se emplearon métodos mixtos (cuestionario y grupos focales) para explorar los conocimientos, percepción de riesgo y prácticas de higiene de los escolares, antes (pre) y después (post) de la intervención.  Resultados:  Después de la intervención se encontró incremento significativo del conocimiento sobre usos de los plaguicidas (56.13%pre vs 96.23%post, p &lt;0.01), vías de exposición (dérmica: 30.19%pre vs 69.81%post, p &lt;0.005; inhalatoria 54.72%pre vs 73.58%post, p &lt;0.005), percepción de riesgos para la salud (54.72%pre vs 92.45%post, p &lt;0.001) e identificación de lugares de almacenaje (50.94%pre vs 75.47%post, p 0.007). Las metodologías didácticas utilizadas fomentaron la participación, motivación e interés de los estudiantes sobre los temas revisados.  Conclusiones: Las estrategias de aprendizaje significativo incrementan la percepción de riesgo y promueven prácticas que reducen la exposición a plaguicidas. No obstante, se requieren intervenciones periódicas para lograr cambios sostenibles a mediano y largo plazo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Objective: Exposure to pesticides is a significant health risk factor for occupationally exposed populations, their families, and those residing in areas near agricultural fields. The objective of this educational initiative was to increase the knowledge and risk perception of schoolchildren at a primary school located in a town dedicated to the cultivation of flowers and ornamental plants, in order to encourage the adoption of environmental hygiene habits that reduce pesticide exposure.  Materials and methods: Between April and June 2024, an educational initiative consisting of 5 sessions was conducted, based on elements of popular education, child-to-child methodology, and meaningful learning. 53 fifth- and sixth-grade primary school students participated. Mixed methods (knowledge questionnaire and focus groups) were used to explore the students' knowledge, risk perception, and hygiene practices before (pre) and after (post) the intervention.  Results:  After the intervention, a significant increase in knowledge about pesticide uses (56.13%pre vs 96.23%post, p &lt;0.01), exposure routes (dermal: 30.19%pre vs 69.81%post, p &lt;0.005; inhalation 54.72%pre vs 73.58%post, p &lt;0.005), perception of health risks (54.72%pre vs 92.45%post, p &lt;0.001) and identification of storage places (50.94%pre vs 75.47%post, p 0.007).
