Decandrae from the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula, Cuba, and Hispaniola is unusual among Neotropical Casearia for compact habit and minute flowers. They have been treated as a single species, C. emarginata. However, there is much variation suggesting that several species are involved. Beyond the C. emarginata complex, the number and ranks of additional Casearia taxa in the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula needs ascertaining.  Questions: Are the West Indian and Mexican Yucatán Peninsula populations of the Casearia emarginata complex conspecific and what names should be applied to them? How many species of Casearia occur in the area here covered?  Studied species: Casearia emarginata and similar taxa.  Study sites and dates: The Mexican Yucatán Peninsula, Cuba, and Hispaniola, 2023-2025  Methods: Morphology of the Casearia emarginata complex was analyzed. We studied Mexican Yucatán Peninsula records of Casearia to assess the number of species.  Results: Mexican Yucatán Península populations of the Casearia emarginata complex are different from their West Indian counterparts by distinctive vegetative architecture with longer, not spiny branches. Eight species of Casearia occur in the Mexican Yucatán Península.  Conclusions: The Yucatán Peninsula populations of the Casearia emarginata complex are not conspecific with the West Indian ones and are instead referable to Casearia randioides. The Mexican Yucatán Peninsula Casearia flora is composed of widespread taxa (e.g. C. corymbosa), and three local endemics (C. randioides, C. subsessiliflora, and C. yucatanensis). Casearia tremula is confirmed in the area.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes: Un complejo de poblaciones de Casearia sec. Decandrae de la Península de Yucatán Mexicana, Cuba y La Española son inusuales entre sus congéneres neotropicales por su hábito compacto y flores diminutas. Han sido tratadas como una sola especie, C. emarginata. Existe mucha variación interna sugiriendo que puede tratarse de varias especies. Es necesario determinar el número de taxones de Casearia en la Península de Yucatán Mexicana.  Preguntas: ¿Son coespecíficas las poblaciones antillanas y las mexicanas del complejo Casearia emarginata? ¿Qué nombres deberían aplicárseles? ¿Cuántas especies de Casearia existen en la la Península de Yucatán Mexicana?  Especies estudiadas: Casearia emarginata y congeneres.  Lugares y fechas del estudio: La porción mexicana de la Península de Yucatán, Cuba y La Española, 2023-2025.  Métodos: Analizamos la morfología del complejo Casearia emarginata. Estudiamos registros de la porción mexicana de la Península de Yucatán de Casearia para determinar el número de especies.  Resultados: Las poblaciones de la porción mexicana de la Península de Yucatán del complejo Casearia emarginata difieren de las antillanas por su arquitectura vegetativa distintiva y ramas elongadas no espinosas. Existen ocho especies de Casearia en el área.  Conclusiones: Las poblaciones de la península de Yucatán del complejo Casearia emarginata son distintas de las antillanas y referibles a Casearia randioides. La flora de Casearia de la Península de Yucatán Mexicana está compuesta por taxones ampliamente distribuidos y endémicos (C. randioides, C. subsessiliflora y C. yucatanensis), confirmandose Casearia tremula en el área.]]></p></abstract>
