Understanding the spatial distribution of pollutants is key for mitigation, especially in areas lacking monitoring networks, such as Xalapa, Mexico.  Questions: Can Tillandsia schiedeana reflect spatial variation in carbon and nitrogen pollutants in a complex urban landscape?  Studied species / Data description: We analyzed tissue carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and the stable isotopes &#948;13C and &#948;15N of the epiphytic plant T. schiedeana at 20 sites.  Study site and dates: Xalapa-Enríquez, Veracruz, Mexico, throughout the year 2024.  Methods: We measured the C and N content in dry tissues, as well as the &#948;13C and &#948;15N isotope signatures. Statistical analyses were conducted to test differences among sites and categories (urban, peri-urban, rural; north, center, south), and spatial patterns were interpreted.  Results: the &#948;15N values were different between urban and peri-urban sites (Mann-Whitney U = 70.0, P = 0.0047; Cliff&#8217;s &#948;= 0.80), whereas C, N, C:N, and &#948;13C values did not differ among location categories. No regional differences were detected either.  Conclusions: Overall, T. schiedeana captures coarse urban signatures via &#948;15N but is not a direct proxy for the isotopic composition of ambient air, thereby setting realistic expectations for the spatial resolution of biomonitoring with this species, in tropical cities.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes: La contaminación atmosférica es un problema ambiental que afecta ecosistemas, clima y salud humana. Comprender la distribución espacial de contaminantes es clave para su mitigación, especialmente en regiones sin redes de monitoreo, como Xalapa, México.  Preguntas: ¿Puede Tillandsia schiedeana reflejar la variación espacial de contaminantes de carbono (C) y nitrógeno (N) en un paisaje urbano complejo?  Especies de estudio / Descripción de datos: Analizamos el contenido de carbono, nitrógeno y los isótopos estables de &#948;13C y &#948;15N en tejidos de la planta epifita T. schiedeana recolectados en 20 sitios.  Sitio y fechas de estudio: Xalapa-Enríquez, Veracruz, México, durante el año 2024.  Métodos: Se midieron los contenidos de C y N, así como los &#948;13C y &#948;15N. Se analizaron las diferencias entre sitios y categorías (urbano, periurbano, rural; norte, centro, sur), y se interpretaron patrones espaciales.  Resultados: los &#948;15N se diferenciaron entre sitios urbanos y periurbanos (prueba de Mann-Whitney U = 70.0, P = 0.0047; &#948; de Cliff = 0.80), mientras que C, N, C:N y &#948;13C no mostraron diferencias entre categorías de ubicación. Tampoco detectamos diferencias por región.  Conclusiones: T. schiedeana detecta firmas isotópicas urbanas a escala gruesa mediante los &#948;15N, si bien no constituye un proxy directo de la composición isotópica del aire.
