Las filogenias han recobrado al género como no monofilético. Por lo que para resolver la problemática taxonómica se han resucitado taxones y se han propuesto nuevos géneros. En el trabajo de colecta realizado en Veracruz se encontraron plantas que corresponden a Gonolobinae, pero no se pudieron asignar a los géneros o especies conocidas. Las diferencias morfológicas entre las plantas colectadas en Veracruz y los taxones de Gonolobinae permiten proponer un género nuevo con tres especies.  Preguntas:  ¿Los ejemplares recolectados corresponden a un género nuevo? ¿Cuáles son los atributos distintivos de este nuevo taxón con respecto al resto de las Gonolobinae?  Taxones de estudio: Bruceholstia, Mexicania, Talayotea, Matelea, M. inops, M. micrantha, M. pseudobarbata y Tutunakanthus.  Sitio y año de estudio:  Chiapas, Oaxaca y Veracruz, México, 2025.  Métodos: Se observaron ejemplares vivos y especímenes de herbarios nacionales e internacionales en presencial y virtuales, incluyendo tipos. Se consultó la literatura especializada sobre Gonolobinae y se realizó una revisión del género, así como la comparación con géneros morfológicamente similares. Se elaboró un mapa de distribución y se propuso el estado de conservación de los taxones propuestos.  Resultados: Tutunakanthus se propone como un género nuevo con tres especies, por su corona ginostegial externa discoidal, amarilla a anaranjada, la interna con cinco apéndices rodeando o apoyados sobre cada antera y frutos con largos aguijones.  Conclusiones: En México, la subtribu está ahora representada por 22 géneros, con siete de ellos endémicos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Matelea (subtribe Gonolobinae) has a complicated taxonomic history. Phylogenies have recovered the genus as non-monophyletic. Therefore, in order to solve the taxonomic problem, taxa have been resurrected and new genera have been proposed. In the collecting work carried out in Veracruz, plants corresponding to Gonolobinae were found, but they could not be assigned to any of the known genera or species. The morphological differences between the plants collected in Veracruz and the taxa of Gonolobinae allow us to propose a new genus with three species.  Questions: Do the collected specimens correspond to a new genus? What are the distinctive attributes of this new taxon with respect to the rest of the Gonolobinae?  Studied taxa: Bruceholstia, Mexicania, Talayotea, Matelea, M. inops, M. micrantha, M. pseudobarbata y Tutunakanthus.  Study site and dates: Chiapas, Oaxaca y Veracruz, Mexico, 2025.  Methods: Live plants and specimens from national and international herbaria were observed in physically and virtually. The specialized literature on Gonolobinae was consulted and a review of the genus was made, compared with morphologically similar genera. A distribution map was elaborated and the conservation status of the proposed taxa was proposed.  Results: Tutunakanthus is proposed as a new genus with three species, because of its discoid, yellow to orange outer ginostegial corona, and the inner one with five appendages surrounding or resting on each anther and fruits with long sharp projections.  Conclusions: In Mexico, the subtribe is now represented by 22 genera, with seven of them endemic.]]></p></abstract>
