La semilla de P. coulteri tiene testa dura, relacionada con porcentajes bajos y tiempos prolongados de germinación, una desventaja para especies en peligro de extinción. En este estudio se evaluó el efecto de tratamientos pre-germinativos sobre la dinámica de germinación de semillas de P. coulteri almacenadas por más de diez años.  Hipótesis: Los tratamientos pre-germinativos mejoran la dinámica de germinación de P. coulteri.  Especie de estudio: Pinus coulteri D.Don.  Sitio y años de estudio: Baja California 2010-2011, Colegio de Postgraduados Campus Montecillo 2023-2024.  Métodos:  Se emplearon 432 semillas bajo un diseño experimental completamente aleatorizado con arreglo factorial 2 × 3 × 2 (hidratación × escarificación × peróxido de hidrogeno), establecidas en condiciones de laboratorio e invernadero. La capacidad germinativa se analizó con un modelo lineal generalizado, y la dinámica mediante la función de Hill.  Resultados:  Aunque no se observaron diferencias significativas en la capacidad germinativa entre condiciones, el laboratorio presentó una germinación más rápida, mientras que el invernadero mostró mayor uniformidad. La escarificación, la aplicación de peróxido de hidrógeno y su interacción con la hidratación fueron los factores más relevantes para mejorar la germinación.  Conclusiones: Algunos tratamientos pre-germinativos favorecen el proceso germinativo, y que el registro en laboratorio permite mayor precisión para caracterizar la dinámica. Además, las semillas de P. coulteri mostraron alta viabilidad tras largos periodos de almacenamiento.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background: Seed coats act as mechanical barriers and can induce physical dormancy by limiting water absorption. Pinus coulteri seeds have a hard seed coat, which is associated with low germination percentages and extended germination periods-an ecological disadvantage for endangered species. This study evaluated the effect of pre-germination treatments on the germination dynamics of P. coulteri seeds stored for over ten years.  Hypotheses: Pre-germinative treatments improve the germination dynamics of P. coulteri.  Studied species: Pinus coulteri D.Don.  Study site and dates: Baja California (2010-2011); Colegio de Postgraduados, Montecillo Campus (2023-2024).  Methods: A total of 432 seeds were used in a completely randomized factorial experimental design (2 × 3 × 2: hydration × scarification × hydrogen peroxide), established under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Germinative capacity was analyzed using a generalized linear model, and germination dynamics were fitted with the four-parameter Hill function.  Results:  Although no significant differences in germinative capacity were observed between conditions, seeds germinated faster in the laboratory, while the greenhouse showed greater uniformity. Scarification, hydrogen peroxide application, and the hydration × hydrogen peroxide interaction were the most relevant factors in improving germination.  Conclusions: Some pre-germination treatments favor the germination process, and laboratory conditions offer greater precision for characterizing germination dynamics. In addition, P. coulteri seeds exhibited high viability after long-term storage.]]></p></abstract>
