It is considered a semidomesticated species that has been seldom studied.  Questions: What levels of genetic and morphological variation can be found in pataxte from cacao growing regions in Mexico?  Study species: Theobroma bicolor (Humb. &amp; Bonpl.).  Study site and date: Cacao growing regions from the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas and Tabasco, Mexico, 2021-2024.  Methods: We collected fruits and leaves for morphological and genetic analyses. For molecular analyses we obtained sequences for four chloroplast and five nuclear regions to estimate genetic diversity and genetic structure. For morphological analyses, we calculated the mean and standard deviation of fruit and leaf morphological traits and obtained violin plots to observe the distribution and density of the data. We also conducted principal component analyses for fruit and leaf morphological traits.  Results: No genetic variation was found among the analyzed DNA regions. Nonetheless, regarding morphological traits, our data suggest morphological variation in leaves and fruit across cacao growing regions in Mexico.  Conclusions: The lack of genetic variation Theobroma bicolor may be explained by its population history. Morphological variation may be present between cacao growing regions, but additional samples are required to test this hypothesis. Implementing genotyping by sequencing or a whole genome sequencing approach will allow analyzing genome wide genetic diversity. Genotype, phenotype and environmental interactions should also be considered in future studies to inform management in terms of seed exchange and plant selection.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes: Theobroma bicolor es un pariente del cacao que se distribuye en México. Es considerada una especie semidomesticada que ha sido poco estudiada.  Preguntas: ¿Qué niveles de variación genética y morfológica pueden encontrarse en el pataxte que crece en las regiones cacaoteras de México?  Especie de estudio: Theobroma bicolor (Humb. &amp; Bonpl.).  Sitio de estudio y fecha: Regiones cacaoteras de los estados de Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas y Tabasco, México, 2021-2024.  Métodos: Se colectaron frutos y hojas para realizar análisis morfológicos y genéticos. Para los análisis moleculares se obtuvieron secuencias de cuatro regiones de cloroplasto y cinco nucleares para estimar diversidad y estructura genética. Para los análisis morfológicos, se calcularon media y desviación estándar de rasgos de frutos y hojas, y se utilizaron gráficos de violín para observar distribución y densidad de los datos. También se realizaron análisis de componentes principales (PCA) para evaluar los rasgos morfológicos.  Resultados: No se detectó variación genética en las regiones de ADN analizadas. Sin embargo, los datos sugieren que hay variación morfológica en hojas y frutos a lo largo de las regiones cacaoteras de México.  Conclusiones: La ausencia de variación genética puede explicarse por la historia poblacional de T. bicolor. Puede existir variación morfológica entre regiones, pero se requiere ampliar el tamaño de muestra para poner a prueba esta hipótesis. Se recomienda implementar genotipado por secuenciación o análisis genómicos. Las interacciones entre genotipo, fenotipo y ambiente deben considerarse en futuros estudios para guiar el manejo, intercambio de semillas y selección de plantas.]]></p></abstract>
