The specific effects on species composition of this have not been sufficiently elucidated. Such knowledge is needed for management and conservation.  Questions: What are the grass species composition and ground cover of grasslands along an intensive grazing - no grazing gradient?  Studied species: Poaceae  Study site and dates: Llanos de Ojuelos, Jalisco. 2016  Methods: Monthly surveys in 6 grassland sites, from severely overgrazed to 36 years without grazing.  Results: We recorded 24 species of grasses. Grama grasses were significantly the most abundant but there were inter-site differences. Purple muhly dominated the ungrazed site, while poverty threeawn dominated another site. Between 1 and 49 % of the ground was bare.  Conclusions: The differences in our sites allow a reinterpretation of the composition of mature, ungrazed grasslands in the area. Blue grama is touted as the climax species of regional grasslands. Until our survey, there was no evidence to consider any other grass species in this role. Our data support the view that dense prairies, rather than grasslands, were the XVI Century regional grasslands, dominated not by the blue grama, but by purple muhly, which is a decreaser under grazing by cattle, and was slowly replaced by grama grasses during the centuries ensuing the arrival of European livestock. Given their adaptation to grazing, blue grama was able to persist much longer in the systems.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Antecedentes: Los pastizales son uno de los componentes principales del paisaje del Altiplano Mexicano, pero el pastoreo los ha impactado fuertemente sin que se hayan elucidado sus efectos. Este conocimiento es necesario para acciones de bioconservación.  Preguntas: ¿Cuáles es la composición específica de gramíneas y cobertura del suelo en pastizales a través de un gradiente de sobrepastoreo severo a no pastoreo?  Especies de estudio: Poaceae  Sitio y años de estudio: Llanos de Ojuelos, Jalisco. 2016  Métodos: Muestreos mensuales en 6 sitios, desde severamente sobrepastoreado hasta 36 años sin pastoreo.  Resultados: Registramos 24 especies de gramíneas. Bouteloua spp. eran significativamente más abundantes, pero se registraron diferencias entre sitios. Muhlenbergia rigida dominó el sitio sin pastoreo y Aristida divaricata dominó otro sitio. Entre 1 y 49 % del suelo estaba desnudo.  Conclusiones: Las diferencias entre sitios permiten la reinterpretación de la composición de pastizales regionales maduros no pastoreados. Bouteloua gracilis se ha considerado como la especie clímax de pastizales regionales, y hasta nuestro estudio no había evidencia para considerar a otra especie en este papel. Nuestros datos indican que praderas densas en lugar de zacatales eran los pastizales regionales en el siglo XVI, dominados no por B. gracilis, sino por M. rigida, especie decreciente bajo pastoreo, que fue reemplazada por Bouteloua spp. durante los siglos posteriores a la llegada del ganado europeo. Dada su adaptación al pastoreo, B. gracilis ha podido permanecer mucho más tiempo en los sistemas.]]></p></abstract>
