Questions:  How many vascular plant species are endemic to the state of Puebla? What is the geographic distribution of endemism in the state? Are there centers of phylogenetic endemism?  Studied species:  356 species of vascular plants.  Study site: State of Puebla, Mexico.  Methods:  Based on the literature review and botanical specimens in digitized databases, the vascular plant species endemic or nearly endemic to the state of Puebla, Mexico, was assessed. Using a grid cell 1° × 1° latitude and longitude size, the incidence of each species was assessed. With the above information and a phylogeny of the species, a spatial phylogenetic analysis was carried out to detect centers of phylogenetic endemism.  Results:  82.6 % of the 356 endemic species to Puebla are distributed in only one to three grid cells. The spatial phylogenetic analysis revealed centers of high phylogenetic diversity and endemism as well as delineated centers of mixed and paleo-endemism.  Conclusions:  The state of Puebla contains areas that meet the criteria to be considered centers of species endemism. Strategies toward a better understanding of plant endemism, as here proposed, suggest a better comprehension of the chorology of Mexican endemism, and assess the true role of our natural protected areas in conserving endemic species.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen:  Antecedentes: El conocimiento del endemismo en una región (natural o política) es importante, por ejemplo, para determinar regiones biogeográficas naturales o para establecer prioridades de conservación.  Preguntas: ¿Cuál es el número de especies de plantas vasculares endémicas del estado de Puebla? ¿Cómo es la distribución geográfica del endemismo en el estado? ¿Existen centros de endemismo filogenético?  Especies de estudio: 356 especies de plantas vasculares.  Sitio: Estado de Puebla, México.  Métodos: Con base en la revisión de literatura y especímenes botánicos en bases de datos digitalizadas, se estimaron las especies de plantas vasculares endémicas o casi endémicas del estado de Puebla, México. Usando una cuadrícula de 1° × 1° de latitud y longitud, se evaluó la incidencia de cada especie. Con la información anterior y una filogenia de las especies se realizó un análisis filogenético espacial para detectar centros de endemismo filogenético.  Resultados: El 82.6 % de las 356 especies endémicas a Puebla se distribuye en solo una a tres celdas de la cuadrícula. El análisis filogenético espacial permitió identificar centros de alta diversidad y endemismo filogenético e identificar centros de paleo-endemismo y de endemismo mixto.  Conclusiones: El estado de Puebla incluye en su territorio áreas que cumplen con los criterios para ser considerados centros de endemismo. Las estrategias para una mejor comprensión del endemismo de plantas, como las aquí propuestas, pueden proporcionar una mejor comprensión de la corología del endemismo mexicano y revelar el verdadero papel que están jugando nuestras áreas naturales protegidas en su conservación.]]></p></abstract>
