<self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2007-42982016000200241&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2007-42982016000200241&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://www.scielo.org.mx/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2007-42982016000200241&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen Para estimar de manera rápida el estado de conservación de una especie arbórea amenazada, se evaluó la densidad y estructura poblacional en categorías de tamaño de Resinanthus aromaticus, un árbol maderable endémico en peligro de extinción, en un área de 0.67 ha, distribuidas en cinco sitios de estudio en el centro de Veracruz. La estructura poblacional se analizó utilizando tres enfoques: el ajuste a la curva log-normal, la proporción de juveniles vs adultos y el coeficiente de asimetría de la distribución en categorías de tamaño de la población. La comparación de los coeficientes de asimetría de la estructura poblacional en las localidades estudiadas resultó ser el método más adecuado para identificar a la población en mejor estado de conservación. Los resultados de este trabajo indican que la densidad poblacional de R. aromaticus presenta una reducción de 57 % con relación a estudios previos y que el análisis del coeficiente de asimetría de la distribución en tamaños de la población podría emplearse como un método rápido para identificar si ésta se encuentra amenazada. De acuerdo con los criterios del Libro Rojo de la IUCN, esta especie debe mantenerse en la categoría &#8220;en peligro de extinción&#8221;.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract In order to quickly evaluate the conservation status of threatened tree species, we assessed the density and population structure in size categories of Resinanthus aromaticus; an endangered endemic timber tree, in five study sites covering 0.67 ha in central Veracruz. The analysis of population structure was performed using three approaches: the adjustment of population size distribution to the log-normal curve, the proportion of juveniles to adults, and the skewness of population size distributions. Comparing the skewness of population size distributions was the most appropriate method to identify the population in better conservation status. The results of this study indicate that the population density of R. aromaticus shows a reduction of 57 % compared to previous studies and the analysis of population size distributions skewness could be used as a quick method to identify threatened populations of tree species. According to the IUCN Red List criteria, this species should be kept in the category &#8220;endangered&#8221;.]]></p></abstract>
