The current burning and accumulation of guishe in open fields represents an ecological problem. Therefore, its use as a raw material for the extraction of phytochemicals is a promising strategy for its valorization.  Objective To evaluate the effect of different parameters in microwave-assisted extraction on the flavonoid content in Agave lechuguilla guishe biomass.  Methodology The effects of different time, temperature, mass:volume ratio and solvent concentration (ethanol) conditions on the flavonoid extraction process were evaluated using a single-factor experimental design. Subsequently, the extract obtained under the best conditions was characterized.  Results The experimental design indicated that the optimal conditions to obtain a higher flavonoid extraction (15.34 ± 0.03 mgQE·g-1 dm) are: irradiation time of 10 min, temperature of 45 °C, mass:volume ratio of 1:25 (g·mL-1) and ethanol concentration of 70 %.  Limitations of the study Raising the temperature and irradiation time in the microwave-assisted extraction process could reduce the concentration of flavonoids due to the possible thermal degradation of these compounds.  Originality Microwave-assisted extraction was shown to be superior to other methods for extracting flavonoids from guishe.  Conclusions Microwave-assisted extraction of flavonoids is an alternative for valorizing guishe and decreasing the environmental impact associated with this agricultural waste.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción El guishe es un residuo vegetal generado durante el tallado de las hojas de Agave lechuguilla para la extracción de fibras. Actualmente, su quema y acumulación en campo abierto representa un problema ecológico. Por lo tanto, su uso como materia prima para la extracción de fitoquímicos es una estrategia prometedora para su valorización.  Objetivo Evaluar el efecto de diferentes parámetros en la extracción asistida por microondas sobre el contenido de flavonoides en biomasa de guishe de Agave lechuguilla.  Metodología Se evaluaron los efectos de diferentes condiciones de tiempo, temperatura, relación masa:volumen y concentración de solvente (etanol) en el proceso de extracción de flavonoides mediante un diseño experimental de un solo factor. Posteriormente, se caracterizó el extracto obtenido con las mejores condiciones.  Resultados El diseño experimental indicó que las condiciones óptimas para obtener una mayor extracción de flavonoides (15.34 ± 0.03 mgEQ·g-1 ms) son: tiempo de irradiación de 10 min, temperatura de 45 °C, relación masa:volumen de 1:25 (g·mL-1) y concentración de etanol del 70 %.  Limitaciones del estudio Elevar la temperatura y el tiempo de irradiación en el proceso de extracción asistida por microondas podría reducir la concentración de flavonoides debido a la posible degradación térmica de estos compuestos.  Originalidad Se demostró que la extracción asistida por microondas es superior a otros métodos de extracción de flavonoides a partir de guishe.  Conclusiones La extracción de flavonoides asistida por microondas es una alternativa para la valorización del guishe y para disminuir el impacto ambiental asociado con este residuo agrícola.]]></p></abstract>
