Certain effects generated by traditional irrigation systems are intentional and others not entirely.  Objective:  To demonstrate that spate irrigation systems generate unintended effects such as flood control, in a 100-year return period, in the presence of maximum floods.  Methodology:  A hydrological analysis was carried out for two scenarios: 1) current situation (water boxes operating) and 2) hypothetical situation (boxes for this purpose are suppressed or disused). Within the hydrological model, with the HEC-HMS program, the methodologies of the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) of the United States (runoff curve number and unit hydrograph) and a design storm of 167.8 mm were considered. Flood routing in channels was performed using the Muskingum method.  Results:  With the current situation, the flow rate generated at the box system outlet was 0 m3·s-1, which is the product of the partial storage of the runoff, while with the hypothetical situation, the maximum flow rate becomes 535.5 m3·s-1.  Study limitations: The efficiency of the water box system as an irrigation technique was not evaluated.  Originality:  There are few hydrological studies that demonstrate quantitative benefits of traditional irrigation techniques.  Conclusions:  The operating water box system functions as a reservoir. If the boxes were removed, a runoff would be generated that would flood agricultural and urban areas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción: En México existe un sistema de irrigación tradicional denominado entarquinamiento, el cual entra en la categoría de riego de avenida, también conocido como &#8220;cajas de agua&#8221;. Ciertos efectos generados por los sistemas tradicionales de riego son intencionados, y otros no del todo.  Objetivo:  Demostrar que los sistema de entarquinamiento generan efectos no intencionados como el control de inundaciones, del periodo de retorno de 100 años, en presencia de avenidas máximas.  Metodología:  Se realizó un análisis hidrológico para dos escenarios: 1) situación actual (cajas de agua operando) y 2) situación hipotética (cajas para entarquinar suprimidas o en desuso). Dentro del modelo hidrológico, con el programa HEC-HMS, se consideraron las metodologías del Soil Conservation Service (SCS) de los Estados Unidos (número de curva de escurrimiento e hidrograma unitario) y un una tormenta diseño de 167.8 mm. El tránsito de avenidas en cauces se realizó con el método de Muskingum.  Resultados:  Con la situación actual, el caudal generado a la salida del sistema de cajas fue de 0 m3·s-1, lo cual es producto del almacenamiento parcial del escurrimiento, mientras que con la situación hipotética, el caudal máximo se vuelve de 535.5 m3·s-1.  Limitaciones del estudio: No se evaluó la eficiencia del sistema de cajas de agua como técnica de riego.  Originalidad:  Existen pocos estudios hidrológicos que demuestran beneficios cuantitativos de técnicas tradicionales de riego.  Conclusiones:  El sistema de cajas de agua en operación funciona como un reservorio. Si se quitaran las cajas, se generaría un escurrimiento que inundaría zonas agrícolas y urbanas.]]></p></abstract>
