It is grown in one-third of the national area, with Sinaloa being the leading producer of irrigated corn in Mexico, mainly by surface irrigation. Faced with competition from non-agricultural sectors for water resources, as well as the high spatial and temporal variability of annual volumes available for irrigation, it has become increasingly urgent to optimize the use of water. An alternative in dry years is to apply regulated deficit irrigation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate this technique in surface-irrigated corn, with three deficit treatments and a control, to which the water requirement demanded by the crop was applied. The water deficit levels applied were: 10, 20, 30 and 0 %, for T1, T2, T3 and C (control), respectively. An irrigation scheduling system that uses the concept of degree days was used. The effect of water deficit levels was evaluated in terms of application efficiency, water productivity and yield. The treatment with the highest deficit generated the best application efficiency and water productivity. Yields were statistically similar in the treatments and the control. Results indicated that using the deficit irrigation technique is a viable option in critical water availability conditions, by having a reduced effect on yields obtained in relation to conventional methods.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen El maíz es el insumo básico de la dieta del mexicano, el cual es cultivado en la tercera parte de la superficie nacional. Sinaloa es el principal productor de maíz bajo riego en México, regado principalmente por gravedad. Ante la competencia de los recursos hídricos por sectores no agrícolas, así como la variabilidad alta espacial y temporal de los volúmenes anuales disponibles para riego, es cada vez más urgente optimizar el uso del agua. Una alternativa en años secos es aplicar riego deficitario controlado. Por ello, el objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar esta técnica en maíz regado por gravedad, con tres tratamientos deficitarios y un testigo, al que se le aplicó el requerimiento hídrico que demanda el cultivo. Los niveles de déficit hídrico aplicados fueron: 10, 20, 30 y 0 %, para T1, T2, T3 y TES, respectivamente. Para la programación de los riegos se utilizó un sistema de calendarización del riego que emplea el concepto de días grado. La evaluación del efecto de los niveles de déficit hídrico se realizó en términos de eficiencia de aplicación, productividad del agua y rendimiento. El tratamiento con mayor déficit generó la mejor eficiencia de aplicación y productividad del agua. Los rendimientos fueron estadísticamente similares en los tratamientos y el testigo. Los resultados indicaron que la aplicación de la técnica de riego deficitario es una opción viable en periodos críticos de disponibilidad de agua, al tener un efecto reducido en los rendimientos obtenidos con respecto de los convencionales.]]></p></abstract>
