Objective To analyze the transitions and dynamics of forest cover and land use in the Nevado de Toluca Flora and Fauna Protection Area (APFFNT) during the period 1971-2021, with the aim of evaluating its conservation status.  Materials and methods Forest cover in the APFFNT (53 590.67 ha) was analyzed using geographic information systems by comparing satellite imagery from two time periods. Changes were evaluated using the Pontius methodology through a transition matrix for the period, which facilitated the quantification of total area, gains, losses, transitions between categories, overall change, and net change.  Results and discussion Over the past 50 years, coniferous forest cover-primarily composed of Pinus hartwegii Lindl. and Juniperus deppeana Steud. -increased by 3 577 ha (6.67 % of the total area of the APFFNT). This gain originated mainly from grassland areas, which showed a decline in their original extent, with a change rate of -1.26 %. Human settlements expanded by 148.92 ha (0.28 %). Additionally, the presence of a sand mine of approximately 15 ha was detected within the protected natural area.  Conclusion The analysis of the APFFNT reflects the land use changes that occurred over the 50-year period between 1971 and 2021. While the changes are not considered extreme, there is a clear trend toward landscape transformation.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción La evaluación de la cobertura forestal y los resultados de su gestión en las áreas naturales protegidas es esencial para determinar la eficacia de las iniciativas implementadas.  Objetivo Analizar las transiciones y dinámicas de coberturas forestales y uso de suelo en el Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Nevado de Toluca (APFFNT) en el período 1971-2021, con el propósito de conocer el estado de su conservación.  Materiales y métodos La cobertura forestal del APFFNT (53 590.67 ha) se analizó con sistemas de información geográfica, mediante la comparación de imágenes de dos tiempos. Los cambios se compararon empleando la metodología de Pontius, a través de un matriz del período que permitió visualizar los totales, ganancias, pérdidas, intercambios, cambio total y cambio neto.  Resultados y discusión En 50 años, la cobertura arbórea de coníferas, compuesta principalmente de Pinus hartwegii Lindl. y Juniperus deppeana Steud., creció 3 577 ha (6.67 % del área total del APFFNT). Este incremento provino del pastizal que experimentó pérdida en su cobertura inicial con una tasa de cambio de -1.26 %. Los asentamientos humanos aumentaron 148.92 ha (0.28 %). Por otra parte, se observó la presencia de una mina de arena de aproximadamente 15 ha dentro del área natural protegida.  Conclusión El análisis del APFFNT refleja los cambios en el uso del suelo ocurridos en los 50 años comprendidos entre 1971 y 2021. Aunque los cambios en la zona no son de carácter extremo, se observa una tendencia clara hacia la transformación del paisaje.]]></p></abstract>
