Objective To determine forest cover loss through a multitemporal analysis for the period 1995-2022 in the Istmo-Costa, Maya, and Lacandon Jungle regions of Chiapas.  Materials and methods Land cover and land use changes were detected through supervised classification of orthophotos and satellite images using QGIS software, and changes between periods were calculated using cross-tabulation. Agreement and accuracy were assessed using the Kappa index. The annual deforestation rate was also calculated by vegetation type.  Results Between 1995 and 2022, the Lacandon Jungle was the most affected area in terms of vegetation loss and modification, with 196 522.59 ha impacted, followed by the Maya region with 90 018.18 ha, and the Istmo-Costa region with 87 510.16 ha. The tropical rainforest accounted for 48.19 % (180 264.29 ha) of the total vegetation cover loss across the three regions, followed by grassland with 32.61 % (121 985.82 ha), and cloud forest with 7.92 % (29 615.43 ha). The deforestation rate for the 1995-2022 period indicates that the ecosystems most severely impacted by vegetation loss were cattail marshes (tular) and savannas.  Conclusions Forest cover loss is primarily driven by agricultural expansion. This land-use dynamic threatens the integrity, resilience, and multifunctionality of the goods and services provided by these regions.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción  En los últimos años, la cobertura forestal en el estado de Chiapas, México, se ha visto amenazada por actividades antropogénicas como la agricultura y plantaciones de especies exóticas.  Objetivo  Determinar la pérdida de cobertura forestal mediante un análisis multitemporal para el periodo 1995-2022 en las regiones Istmo-Costa, Maya y Selva Lacandona en el estado de Chiapas.  Materiales y métodos  Los cambios de cobertura y uso del suelo se detectaron a través de clasificación supervisada de ortofotos e imágenes satelitales con el software QGIS y los cambios entre periodos se calcularon mediante tabulación cruzada. La concordancia y precisión se evaluaron con el índice de Kappa. Se calculó también la tasa de deforestación anual por tipo de vegetación.  Resultados  Durante el periodo 1995-2022, la Selva Lacandona fue la más afectada con la pérdida y modificación de vegetación en 196 522.59 ha, seguida de la región Maya con 90 018.18 ha y la región Istmo-Costa con 87 510.16 ha. La selva alta perennifolia representa 48.19 % (180 264.29 ha) de la pérdida de cobertura de las tres regiones, seguido del pastizal con 32.61 % (121 985.82 ha) y el bosque mesófilo de montaña con 7.92 % (29 615.43 ha). La tasa de deforestación del periodo 1995-2022 indica que los ecosistemas con mayor impacto por la pérdida de su cobertura fueron el tular y la sabana.  Conclusiones  La pérdida de cobertura forestal se debe principalmente a la expansión de la agricultura. Esta dinámica de uso del suelo pone en riesgo la integridad, resiliencia y multifuncionalidad de bienes y servicios que brindan estas regiones.]]></p></abstract>
