Objective  To develop a compatible system of equations for estimating the volume of individual trees of Juniperus coahuilensis (Martínez) Gaussen ex R. P. Adams in the semi-desert region of Durango.  Materials and methods  A total of 153 trees were destructively sampled. Iterated seemingly unrelated regression (ITSUR) was used to simultaneously fit the system, ensuring minimum error and compatibility among the equations. Heteroscedasticity and autocorrelation in the hierarchical data was corrected using weighted regression and a continuous second-order autoregressive model, respectively.  Results  The system of equations is the first developed for J. coahuilensis in Mexico and includes a taper function, a merchantable volume equation, and equations for stem volume, coarse branch volume, and total volume. The equations explained 98 % of the observed variability in merchantable volume, 86 % in stem volume, and more than 45 % of the variability in branch volume.  Conclusions  The use of the compatible system of equations developed will be useful for the management of J. coahuilensis in arid and semi-arid ecosystems and will reduce errors in total tree volume estimates.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Introducción  Las ecuaciones de ahusamiento son herramientas útiles en el manejo forestal y su uso puede expandirse a especies de ecosistemas áridos o semiáridos.  Objetivo  Desarrollar un sistema de ecuaciones compatibles para estimar el volumen de árboles individuales de Juniperus coahuilensis (Martínez) Gaussen ex R. P. Adams en el semidesierto de Durango.  Materiales y métodos  Se utilizaron 153 árboles muestreados destructivamente. Se utilizó regresión iterativa aparentemente no relacionada para ajustar simultáneamente el sistema, lo cual garantiza errores mínimos y compatibilidad entre ecuaciones. La heterocedasticidad y autocorrelación de los datos jerárquicos se corrigieron mediante regresión ponderada y un modelo autorregresivo continuo de segundo orden, respectivamente.  Resultados  El sistema de ecuaciones es el primero desarrollado para J. coahuilensis en México y comprende una función de ahusamiento, una ecuación de volumen comercial y ecuaciones de volumen del fuste, ramas gruesas y volumen total. Las ecuaciones explicaron 98 % de la variabilidad observada en el volumen comercial, 86 % en el volumen fustal y más del 45 % de la variabilidad en el volumen de las ramas.  Conclusiones  El uso del sistema de ecuaciones compatibles desarrollado será útil para el manejo de J. coahuilensis en ecosistemas áridos y semiáridos y reducirá los errores en las estimaciones del volumen total de los árboles.]]></p></abstract>
